Single Parents are child-abusers?

Post » Sun Jul 08, 2012 8:30 pm

Hey, anyone seen this?

http://chicagoist.com/2012/03/07/wi_grothman_parenthood_abuse.php

I find that a bit messed up if I read that correctly. According to this, if a parent raise a child alone, they are neglecting the child, therefore abusing them.
That's both strange and a bit funny if you ask me, and if that law comes through I'll lose hope in humanity.

But anyways, what do you guys think?

Strange? Try terrifying...

I know nothing about the law in Wisconsin, but hopefully he wont be able to actually pass this law. It's clearly absurd, discriminatory and insulting.

I think this is proof that when religous extremism of any kind is directly related to making laws someone gets discriminated against.

I think it is sad that society still places so much value and judgement into what is essentially a courtship ritual. Who is this Grohman to say that two people who got each others name tattooed on each other and got legally recognised as partners are any more likely to abuse a child than two people who exchanged rings? My parents were married in a church and everything, but saying a couple of schmaltzy poems didn't magically make my Dad take his alcohol better and change the longstanding family tradition of facing real consequences for real mistakes, nor does someone saying that they vow not to committ advltery neccesarilly stop from sixually abusing a child.

Even though this concept seems archaic and based on old-world stereotypes, to me the courts bias to granting a mother custody by default is just as shocking

Unfortunately I don't see how this topic can avoid religion which is a shame.

Yeah, I guessed this would eventually get locked for that, but I found that I had to post it at least.
Inform people about it, you know.

I brought a child up on my own. This [NUMINIT] has therefore, imo, personally insulted me and defamed my character. Eternal enmity earned. The sad thing is, I am not in the least surprised that people like this get positions of power when there are those who fall for the old 'stop people who aren't like you or me doing what they are doing, for the sake of liberty and freedom' nonsense.

It's better to have one loving parent than two that are dysfunctional as a couple and remain together "for the sake of the children". Some (many) "traditional" families are far, far from being perfect.

I'm not even sure I understand what is going on... But if I did understand, I feel a facepalm that goes through my face fits the situation quite well.

This is incredibly stupid. So basically they'll be chasing after single-mothers (e.g) as if they were child abusers.

I can't even describe how wrong that is.

one.
Someone mail this to Jon Stewart or Steven Colbert.. one of them ought to do a piece on this..

two.
As a single parent, I can safely say I've devoted the rest of my life to my son, especially since his mother can be such a flake at times..

two/a.
As a human I can also safely say I'd hospitalize the idiot responsible for this were I ever to share an elevator with the waste-of-space brainfart... or see him walking in the streets.. or occupy the same city as he did... or inhabit the same state he did..

three through the rest.
yeah.. I'm mad :verymad:

I'd rather send it to the Amazing Atheist. Seen his channel on YouTube?

Bills like this should never have even passed the rational thinking center of the man's brain, much less been introduced to the state senate with the intention that it become a full fledged law at some point.

We need more people with engineering degrees running the country, not law and business degrees. Maybe THEY would have some common damn sense.

Well, it isn't outlawing divorce, but it could be a step in that direction.

to me, it seems as if they are going to try to pressure single parents into marrying.
they'd probaby harass widows too.

That almost sounds like the idea is being put forward that being forced to spend the rest of your life with someone who, although they were once wonderful, has changed so much that you can only despise or fear them is a good thing. Either that or someone is bored and trying to get a rise.

On a not too unrelated topic: In the future, you will be able to have a child with yourself. No other human is needed, male or female.

Carry on.

I'm not looking for a rise, I just have a differing view point... something that most people don't know the difference between.

Yes, I don't think divorce should be legal, which is why the concept of the OP's link appeals to me.

I'm not putting forward any ideas, just participating.

Hey, if you guys start an argument over this, the thread'll be closed. And I don't like when my threads are closed over other people's bickering.
