Sizing, today

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 10:52 am

What do you guys think about the way clothes are sized today? I'm a teen guy and have an oddly sophisticated taste in clothing. I like things like pea coats, blazers, ties, etc. I like to look classy, okay?

But as I'm shopping (online in this case) I come to realize that for men, clothes only comes in two sizes. "Boys" which is 99% of the time made for little 8 year old boys, hence the store presenting me with Captain America t-shirts and jean shorts, and "Mens" which is 99% of the time made for 20 year old men, hence the store presenting me with construction boots and size 32 slacks.

There appears to be no "in between" for males my age. Even with my taste, when shopping for "normal" clothes, like jeans, shoes, shirts, the sizes are almost always divided into 8 year old boy sizes, and 20 year old man sizes, I am 15 years old, I can't be wearing a size XXL boy's Captain America t-shirt or a size XXS men's pair of slacks! I need sizes for people MY age! Clothing, for men at least, is very biased to being either very young or very old and it's not fair.

So, what is your take on the crazy sizing these days? Are you pissed off because you can't find clothes for people your age? Do you think it's just fine? Does taste in apparel correlate directly to how big the clothes is?

I really hate that I can't wear clothes that I like, only because manufacturers refuse to make them come in my size.

The only things that fit me are "mall clothes" which is almost always some stupid band t-shirt and a pair of skinny jeans. I'm all for band tees and skinny jeans, but I don't want to be forced to wear that all the time just because it's all that "fits my age group".

I think you just need to start buying clothes from different places, you can't find clothes like you're describing in the same place you'd find band tshirts and skinny jeans.

I buy most of my clothes from this local shop because they offer to tailor trousers and stuff for you. It's more expensive but it's worth it in my opinion because you can get clothes that fit you perfectly.

I am a few years older than you though :P

I'm confused as to what you are saying here. You mean you fall somewhere in between the biggest boys size and the smallest mens size?

How tall are you? Slacks and trousers can easily be found in a 28 or 30 inch waist. If they're still too loose, you can have the waist taken in an inch or two. Most larger stores offer this service in store.

Shirts, etc. can also be tailored easily enough. It's relatively inexpensive to have the sleeves shortened and the body of the shirt taken in.

It's a bit more difficult for the likes of blazers, suits and coats. Try on some of the 'trendier' brands as they are usually cut slimmer and often go down to a 34S in sizes. Again, you can have these tailored easily enough if the fit isn't spot on.

oh yeah I almost forget. Don't be afraid to buy women's clothing. Half of my tshirts were meant for women  I buy them because it's impossible to find a male tshirt that fits if you've got a large chest and a slim waist... and tbh baggy clothes are ugly.

I'm about 5,5", a size 14 in most jeans I buy (I know sizing differs by brand, but in almost every pair of pants I buy, it's a 14) I don't know whether or not the size 14 is in men's sizes or not. All I know is, when I buy jackets or shirts, they are either a very small men's size or a very large boy's size. There really is no in between.

EDIT: Baggy clothes are very ugly, everything I buy is usually very fitting to my body type.

I'm only two inches taller than you (and sadly, I won't be growing any more, unlike you), and I'm pretty much the smallest size in any brand I try. You've just got to shop around, and, as already mentioned, get stuff tailored - it'll do wonders.

Indeed, I'd be willing to bet that all the women on this forum would pick either two or three of these guys:

Even if you're a bit overweight (not saying you are though) wearing baggy clothes is a mistake, they only make you look more overweight.

The first fit is terrible - shapeless, and it looks like he borrowed his big brother's t-shirt.

The second is good, and the third is good provided you're in decent shape.

Me and Exo are tight, so this is a joke. I know I have to mention this.

Still, though, you buy women clothes? Really? Buy boy's clothes if men's sizes are too big.

So you have tshirts with big hearts and the like?

One is too baggy, and the other one is too tight. Well, unless you have big legs and a regular fit fits tight (I love that feeling), but otherwise, skinny jeans on skinny legs which fit tight are a no go IMO.

My rule is, if you hear the pants chafe, they are too baggy.

This.

Clothes should be slim, but they shouldn't be tight.

Yep, agree with this, the other way around as well. I've got a men's hooded sweater in my wardrobe. I often find men's hoodies have longer torso lengths and are thicker. Some women's sweaters I have barely reach my lower back, it gets quite draughty.
