Sky/Bloom Flickers Madly - AMD Profile

Post » Wed Apr 28, 2010 4:29 pm

Hello,

It's hardly playable the way it is with the AMD Crossfire profile. The sky flickers like crazy outdoors and it's like the sun at maximum glare flickering, so the screen almost turns completely yellow/white every other frame. The sunlight coming through the windows while indoors has this effect as well, so maybe that says something (shader?). Tried recording it but in the FRAPs recording, it actually looks fine without the flickers! I don't understand the technical aspects here so maybe you could tell me.

Changing the .exe's name to Rift.exe, as I've found out in other forums, does make the flicker go away, but I'm not sure about the performance boost there, whether it's as much as the AMD Crysis 2 profile.

Specs:

i7 920
5850 x 2 Crossfire
6 GB Ram
Vista x64

Nothing overclocked!

Hopefully this is good without the video to show it since I can't seem to get that effect replicated in the recording.

EDIT: Video here, used a webcam.

Could it be that one of the GPUs is broken? Can't find any post about anyone else having it. Maybe because not many are able to try yet.

B.

P.S. In Singapore, and it seems it was released at 12am last night local time and it's GMT +8 here!

Looks like AMD updated the profiles for Improved Crossfire Performance in Crysis 2.

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx

Update: Just tried this and still had the flicker problems in crossfire :(

I got the same problem, the wired thing is, I didn't have flickering in the demo but I do in the full game. Another thing is that Crysis 1 had the same problem for me until it was patched up. So im very irritated I spent 60$ on a beta test.

Hello,
Running a water cooled & OC'd HD4870X2 with Catalyst 11.2 and the AMD profile update mentioned in this thread and nothing changed. I've been playing around with the Catalyst settings, reducing res, turning off features, and so far have not found the golden combination. I just turned off Catalyst A.I. and can confirm that you DO NOT want to turn it off (yes, the 4870X2 is a dual gpu card.) It's basically like a completely uncontrolled graphics mess without the A.I. managing things.

I'm going to continue playing with the Catalyst settings and resolutions...

UPDATE1...wow, the lighting issues are workable until you go outside!! That's just obnoxious. This definitely smells like a patch is needed to me.

I probably should have posted this earlier, but if you're using 11.2 you can disable crossfire through RadeonPro to get rid of the flickering issues, but it'll cost some performance till someone releases a driver update/patch.

Yeah I have the same issues as everyone else. It always happens when you shoot with the weapons because of the muzzle flash effect. Very hard to aim in MP when thats happening as you're shooting. Using 11.4 Preview drivers along with the latest application profiles.

Same issue here was on a night map all was good, then went to a day map on Terminal and all hell broke lose, crazy flicker I had to get off of it. Cause it was unplayable.

CF Radeon 6970, latest drivers & profiles. Also the Beta was just fine on day maps.

Update2 from me...

Installed the game on a different system with a single HD5770 running 11.2 and I don't have the lighting issues (and can run at higher res ironically.) Does the HD5970 and some of the other 6000 series cards people are running with the lighting issues have dual GPUs? It seems many of the complaints in our thread are people that are running the crossfire drivers (either >1 card or single card with dual gpus.)

My 2 test boxes...

Dual Opteron 290
3GB DDR
Vista Ultimate 64bit
HD 4870X2
Catalyst 11.2 + AMD profile patch

Single Opteron 285
8GB DDR
Win7 pro 64bit
HD 5770
Catalyst 11.2 + AMD profile patch

Hello,
Which ATI Catalyst Tab? The only one I see in the CCC is the Catalyst A.I. tab and when I disable that I get extremely undesirable results. Massive fragments, geometry is all messed up, etc. Please clarify, thanks!

Yeah you found the right tab. What kind of card do you have? I understand the 5970 disabling the AI Catalyst check box does not work.

The card I'm trying to troubleshoot is an HD 4870X2. It's a dual GPU card and from my experience today, you must have the A.I. turned on when crossfire is engaged. I'm trying to find the profile manager that was referenced in the other thread you were replying to. Any ideas there? Perhaps he's using something older than 11.2.

Posted this on another thread with similiar issues, with ATI I simply disabled catalyst AI and it fixed the issue for me.

Hi Shadow...yes, I saw your other post as well. The problem is when you disable the Catalyst A.I. on a card using crossfire drivers it does not function properly (at least in my testing today.)

I think AMD took the profile manager out of the 11.2 driver/pkg. I happen to have 10.12 from December so I'm going to install that and see if it makes a difference for my config.

Okay, de-installed 11.2, Installed 10.9, and renamed crysis2.exe to rift.exe. No more lighting issues.

Going to re-install 11.2 tomorrow but I'm now a believer that taking the silly catalyst profile out of the equation by renaming the game executable is a viable workaround for this issue. Ugh.

Re-installed 11.2 with the profiles but kept the game executable renamed (nullifying the AMD app profile I guess?) and the game worked without a hitch all features on and maxed. Good to know that I won't have to buy another card yet. :)
