Skyrim disappoints.... :-(

Post » Wed Aug 22, 2012 11:18 pm

After putting hundreds of hours into this game, I'm at the point where I can honestly say it's WORSE than Oblivion on many levels.

Okay, to a degree, the graphics are better. Where I find the game failing is in mechanics.

1. I know Skyrim is a mountainous locale, but the terrain is rough, and for heaven's sake...if a horse can get over something, how come I can't do so even more easily (people can scale steep hills better than horses can)? As a result, I wind up fast traveling everywhere because running up, down and around mountains and rocks got old within a few hours.

2. The map interface is hokerrs...almost all one color. After a while, it's frustrating. White on white with really no "map detail" worth mentioning illustrating roads and such. The map should look like a map for heaven's sake, not a photo of the region from 10,000 feet up.

3. The inability to make custom spells is a disappointment.

4. The reqiurement to find an enchanted item to get that enchantment as something you could build on...annoying.

5. Even less garment options. Boots, Body, Head, Hands, Neck and ONE RING? Good thing enchanting got neutered...you really don't run out of options. But even there...very little options in casual clothing...most all being predesigned whole outfits.

6. Relatively banol storyline. After a while, the game stops being fun and becomes work to get through even the mainline quests.

7. Effectively no real "role play" to the game. Maybe it's an inherent flaw of TES games (they let you do it all and not limit your options based on early-on class choice), but there is really no point in trying to simulate a life in the game. Marriage was pointless (could be its own point, but it fits in here). Get married, move in, and all you get is some money and a meal once a day? No relationship dynamics worth mentioning. Why bother with it at all?

Am I the only one who finds Syrim to be a disappointment COMPARED to Oblivion? I remember how bad some thought Oblivion was compared to Morrowind.

Just a heads up, people are going to kick and scream, put no logic to your points and claim you're not a true fan. Sorry mate...

3) That's not the only problem - magic system was gutted.

6) Oblivion's faction questlines were definitely superior. Oblivion's MQ had me complaining about lack of character development - Skyrim's MQ was just plain meh. Such a shame, because it did open with a bang.

I'm glad it's not just me, then.

My OCD will force me to play a new character when I'm done because I missed out on one of the achievements because I didn't realize something was a Daedric artifact, so I didn't choose it. Unlike prior games where you knew you were doing stuff for Daedric lords, this time several are just given over and you don't always pick up on it.

I remember people complaining that Bethesda would make Fallout 3 "Oblivion with guns." Skyrim was like "Fallout 3 with dragons and no guns."

Yeah I have to agree. I found Oblivion overall better than Skyrim. There just wasn't much of an upgrade from Oblivion to Skyrim except the graphics. The fact of the matter is a lot of things were taken away from Oblivion to Skyrim and that doesn't seem like a good thing to do to a sequel at all.

I completely understand why people who loved Morrowind and daggerfall wouldnt like Skyrim as much.

But saying Oblivion is better than Skyrim is something i cant possibly understand..

Skyrim main story is pretty bad, Oblivious is much much worse(it couldnt have been any more generic honestly)
Oblivious world was like some rainbow happy fary land with pink ponies which made it completely boring to me, while Skyrims is much darker and miles more intresting(and here Skyrim beats oblivion in Storytelling aswell, as Bethesdas best storytelling point is what actually happens and what you see in dungeons)

The combat is.. a thousand times more intresting/entertaining in Skyrim also
The only thing Oblivion had over Skyrim for me was spellmaking :S

But maybe im just a weirdo who found Oblivion one of the most boring gameworlds to walk in :P

There are definitely aspects of Oblivion that I miss, but Skyrim is still pretty solid for me.

Skyrim was like "Fallout 3 with dragons and no guns."

Sorry, don't see it. I mean, other than the general, Bethesda, "open world sandbox; first person perspective" thing. But that's all their games.
Quest design isn't the same, dungeon design isn't the same, it's the TES skill system (not the Fallout one)...... not sure where you're getting it.

Unless this is just some shallow "hey, it's got slow-mo kills" comparison.

"After putting hundreds of hours into this game..."

This seems to be a trend in these posts lately. Read that to yourself again: you put hundreds of hours into this game. Most of those seemed to be enjoyable or you wouldn't have kept playing. How many games on the market now can say they offer hundreds of hours of enjoyment?

I understand you probably put more hours into Morrowind and Oblivion. That's great. But you can't say the game is 'bad' because your replay value is low after HUNDREDS of hours of gameplay.

They took a lot of things out of Skyrim, and added a bunch more. Rune spells. Dual wielding. Mounted combat. Shouts. Perk trees. Smithing. Dragons. You obviously like the older stuff more than the new stuff that was added. There's nothing wrong with that, but again, that doesn't make it a bad game.

Well, I definitly think it's the worst one (Morrowind wins just because of the Dunmers and nostalgia).
It's not a bad game but a horrible TES game.
What doesn't mean that I don't enjoy it!
It's a fun game and I have put more than 200 hours into it.
For me this isn't that much (Morrowind, I don't even want to know how much time I put into you)
People always say that powerleveling manages to break Morrowind way too easy but I don't think so.
Skyrim is even worse, I can manage to get to level 30 really fast and it's easy as heck anyways.
Dragons are so easy. Just took me less than 20 seconds to kill one on Master difficulty with my Dunmer necrobattlemage...

He probably ment it that way:
It's not a bad game but a bad TES. Most of the Fallout fans (me included  ) get butthurt as hell when it comes to Fallout because it literally destroyed the Fallout universe.
Well, Skyrim didn't destroy it but it changed quite some lore related stuff and it's wayyyy too cazualised

...

If you were so disappointed with Skyrim then why did you put hundreds of hours into it? I don't understand. Know me, I've said from the very beginning -- Skyrim overwhelms me with sheer boredom and I've only managed 27 hours. Since then, I've only put a few more hours in due to mods... and I like to mess around with the CK.

Do you mean me?
Well, I like to put lots of time into the games I play.
I hardly play any games because I'm really picky.
The thing is, Skyrim is atleast a little bit fun and I played way too much Morrowind and Fallout in the time before its release so I just sticked to it, exploited it and just did everything with loads of characters

Skyrim doesnt really have the replayability of past TES games.
People, me included, still play Daggerfall and Morrowind, and presumably Oblivion though I dont.
Thats thousands of hours.
So the hundreds that Skyrim gives the three or four playthroughs its still fresh and exciting dont really compare.

Its a fun game and it is certainly beautiful, but its just is not my favorite TES game.

You said it better than I ever could.
I often had those crazy long Skyrim sessions but then lacked the will to play it for a long tim
