This. Google News will give you like 80 hits of different articles saying the same thing. Just Google Skyrim in Google News (not Web).

Yes, but how does this patch work? Do I merely need xbox live, or must I pay for it?

This isn't really news, pretty much every game has a day one patch nowadays.

Like war wizard said, free, but that's a given since this will be a day 1 patch.

Day one patches typically contain last minute fixes and the like, so they don't charge anyone for them. Just sort of a standard thing now, as Ragamuffin said.

Pardon me for my ignorance, but how can a patch not be free, its a patch not a DLC.

It would take a pretty worthless company to charge for fixes to their game. Not even sure if it'd be legal.

I believe all patches are optional to install and free.

Not on steam. If steam knows a game has a patch, you HAVE to patch it. It wont let you play otherwise, and its against the EULA to circumvent it...

Also, numerous console/handheld games force updates before they'll let you play.

Well if a company did do that, it would go down as the biggest face-palm  in the history of gaming.

I had not known that. That is interesting. I always played PS3 of bethesda.

The game had to be shipped to manufacturers, and to MS and Sony for certification quite a while ago. It would be very surprising if they hadn't hammered out some optimization in that time. It's just the nature of things these days, patching isn't a big deal anymore.

Unless the game is totally unplayable without the patch, then there's no issue. You are not legally entitled to performance increases.

Of course, the community backlash would be an absolute hellstorm. And rightfully so.

I have a hunch that this is just an anti-piracy thing. Those who don't buy the game will be playing a defected product and those who are foolish enough to patch their game, will need re-cracking etc.

Hopefully the patch notes don't contain a spoiler. Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time has a patch that reveals the name of the final boss, which is an enormous spoiler, and they pop the message right up on your screen when you first play the game.

There is a way to turn this off for most games. Within your Steam library, right click a game, select Properties, and then see the Updates tab. Should be able to prevent the game from auto-updating.
