Technically I'd think "joke" only requires that it be made with the intention of being funny.

Otherwise there'd be no such thing as a "bad" joke, which is what this is.

Maybe, it takes time to write these shows and maybe......perhaps!!!!.....theres someone on the writing staff that played Skyrim and enjoyed it like any other gamer.

Someone specifically said that "mainstream has it now and is dead." Then there are those that really do think of this meme as a underground awesome thing.

Either way, some guy enjoyed the meme at one point and wanted to make a joke about it on his show. No harm no foul.

People tell bad jokes all the time. My friends will tell you that at least 85% of mine are bad. Also, maybe this episode was written in, say, December, when the joke wasn't funny but at least it wasn't beaten into the ground. Believe it or not, but episodes aren't written and filmed three hours before they air.

I hate the arrow in the knee meme in general, but I have to admit I did laugh fairly hard at that. The trick is that the joke wasn't in the line itself, as everyone on the internet seems to think it is - it was the old guy's reaction that did it. Hell, even in Skyrim the humour came not only in the illogical nature of the phrase but the fact that it was repeated by guards across the world. Internet memes generally don't 'get' humour, and as a result are not funny. Deal with it.

If putting a stupid, and utterly worthless internet sensation on the TV kills it dead, someone needs to get the pony thing on CSI or something. I'd listen to the "arrow in the knee" bit countless more times to not have to see advlts with [censored] pony avatars anymore.
