No thanks. I don't approve of how Curse.com is intending to 'support' the modding community.

http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/444272-offering-from-cursecom/

EDIT: The link only works if you're a recognised modder at the Nexus forums (its in their discussion forums). I think that to be a recognised modder there you need something like 7000 downloads in total from your files hosted on the Nexus sites.

I can't quote the OP without referencing the replies (or it loses all meaning), and there's 8 pages of exposition by various modders on why curse.com's intentions are most likely only to have a damaging effect on the community.

Unfortunately, those who aren't recognised modders are just going to have to take my word for it. :(

It's 1000 unique downloads across all mods.
I have 1200 unique DL's on my mods and I'm a recognized modder.

Our current big issue we face is the fact that unlike MMOs like WoW or Rift, it will take a new system to be implemented to make sure that no .esp files (or even texture files) conflict. Currently, the plan is to make this incredibly simple for both mod author and user -- inject a simple, hidden ctoc file into the zip. This does not affect the author's files in any way, and is only used by our system to make sure that these files are not conflicting in any way, shape, or form with another mod. The users would never see it, as they would either be using our Curse Client to be downloading the mods, or because it's hidden in the zip file.

That was the point at which I flipped a rude gesture at my monitor and closed the browser tab. I do not like the idea of a mod site that feels it's OK to tamper with its users' uploads, no matter what form that may take (well, aside from file-renaming for database purposes, I mean). Guess this means I'll have to keep a closer eye on where my mods turn up. :ninja:

I have never had issues myself I love the way Curse has always done things. I do know that its to help protect against plagiarism as well as for the curse client. I know though people will dislike things here and there but at the end of the day was it really an issue or was it just the brand name you disliked? Just saying I never have always been the biggest fan but after getting to know a company things do change. I could see really good things coming out of this.

It's not a fear of change, it's a principle of Creator and User - which I already explained more thoroughly in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1256539-skyrimforge-mod-hosting-development-tools-and-much-more/page__view__findpost__p__19151788

I will not permit my mods to be hosted on a site that is comfortable with altering my uploads.

I don't know what these guys hope to accomplish by giving people a deadline of 1 month when the CK isn't even available yet. One month is barely enough time to put together something of any real substance, much less time enough to actually test it.

Oh, and this magical "no conflicts of any kind" thing? Not likely.

Agreed. That seems silly, especially considering how much cash they have set aside for this. I have a major mod in planning but rushing it out in 28 days time would be daft and probably impossible. :sadvaultboy:

The bottom line is these people just look at the traffic on the Nexus and see $ signs. They have absolutely no desire to proliferate the growth and expansion our community while maintaining our high standards of integrity because their is no fast money in that.

I honestly think the deadline is too small , also because there is no Editor yet and there may not be for at least another month , if the competition wants to stay serious and get some really quality instead than be forced to Prize the first stuff that was submitted then the deadline shoudl be extended to the next year at least....

The CK isn't out yet, check the sticky. Refactoring other tools is the only thing that can be done right now. Textures are done in editors like Gimp.

Please do your research on Curse.com before joining, they have a bad reputation for having unethical business practices.

If in a week it looks like we really need to, the deadline will be pushed back.

Hi guys! :) Happy Skyrim day! Just kinda want to talk a little about the contest.

I understand that we at Curse are new to the Elder Scroll's modding community, but we're not new to the modding community as a whole. For several years we've been rewarding WoW authors through our Modder's Rewards program on Curse Forge and we've been extremely active in their community and in supporting them. We really appreciate the work and effort that goes into the mods you all make and as PC gamers, we rely on them too!

The contest is an effort to reward those who create the world's first Skyrim mods and we can't wait to see them as they roll out! In the coming weeks we'll have a Modder's Reward program for Skyrim as well, based on http://skyrimforge.com.

We also understand that the contest deadline relies on how soon the Skyrim modding kit is released. Like I said on Curse.com, in a week we will take a look at our contest entrants/situation and if we think that more time is needed we will absolutely extend the deadline, so please, let us know if you think the deadline's totally off!

Just have fun with the contest and enjoy Skyrim!

Except it's not tampering (you seem to go for all the negative words one could use in place of 'edit') since tampering implies damaging/misusing, etc. I'd say it's more of a helpful addition.

If they tell you what will be done to the mods uploaded to the site and it's your choice whether to use it or not, why are you getting so worked up about it?
