Skyrim quests are DULL!

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 5:30 pm

120+ hours in, here. I was disappointed by the lack of choices and consequences in this game. I can't help, but compare it to Fallout: New Vegas questing.
Replaying this game for the 3rd and 4th time feels like a chore with all these quests. Also the Speech skill is almost useless in conversations.
Although linear, the quests were lots of fun when playing for the first time.

Here's hoping that the upcoming expansions will improve on this.

Yeah I can agree with this. There are few choices to be made that have any impact on anything made worse by the fact half of the npc's in skyrim are immortal. Seems they really turned on easy mode in regards to questing. They didn't want us to have to deal with the consequences of our actions or not getting done stupid fetch quest because we killed an npc that got mouthy.

Yeah, choices with consequences are good and is something i wish they had put more effort into. But Skyrim seems to be about quantity rather than quality when it comes to questing and whatnot.

Football is boring. The first few games were fun, but now it's just all the same and feel like a chore.
You get on the field, kick a ball for 90 minutes and you either win or lose. DULL!

I will say it again, there are more choices then just run and gun crap in Skyrim. If people weren't such hardcoe elitist anti guide players. They would realize that alot of the bigger quests have more options to finish. I am sorry But I do not understand where people say that the Skyrim quests are less or worse then Oblivion. Oblivion IMHO was probably the most linear TES game I ever had the displeasure of playing. Even the map was linear and all the dungeons had exact archtype themes..... Bandits, Conjurers, Necromancers, Mythical Creatures. Talk about copy and paste...lol As I mentioned about the mapping. The paths were pathetic. One giant circle around IC and a cute little path each leading to a city. No where to explore or get lost whatsoever. To me I never felt any danger in Oblivion. In Skyrim more nasties come out at night when you are roaming around.

I wouldnt say dull, but the one complaint I have with the game is the Civil war missions not changing a damn thing. People even speak about the war going on after you finish it

Heh, not exactly. 90+ hours on my main dunmer warrior and about the rest for the other characters. Mostly Breton mage and Nord Battlemage. The other one was an orc, i think D: I also restarted my replays a couple of times, because I often reconsidered my early character builds.

And yeah, essential characters was a pain in the ***.

A lot of Skyrim's quests really don't feel like anything has changed at all, no. I remember in Oblivion, sometimes you'd do quests and NPCs who you could see around towns and cities would move, they would die and all sorts of other things...

Skyrim's residents it seems hire adventurers to do almost any menial task for them but there is an unfortunate side-effect, many of these adventurers careers do appear to be ended prematurely by...

Heh, reminds me of Kvatch, where it was left hanging after closing the Oblivion gates with fires still burning and npcs standing in one place for months, claiming that they are going to "rebuild".
Thank you Bethesda for providing us with modding tools, so we can fix your unfinished mess.

Skyrim's residents have the memory of a goldfish. You can kill a dragon, they'll all go "WOOOOAH HE'S DRAGONBORN" then five minutes later (after they repeat that dialog every minute, after trying to walk away from the bones, only for their AI to pull them back over there) they forget who you are. :P

Oh well, at least exploration is awesome. I disabled my compass, which makes it feel just like Morrowind.

There are some very good quests, but the lack of choice is often frustrating. Its hard to play a specific type of character when you are piloted into one choice scenarios.

I wish you could decline some quests as well to remove them from your journal. Just having the option to say "no I won't do that" to some of the npcs would have been better.

I have been writing pretty positive stuff about this game as I was waiting for it to come out for a while after Deus Ex. I am still on my first play and only invested maybe 55 hours of game play. I was enjoying(and still am despite) the Dark Brotherhood quest line until I went to a mission to kill a particular contract. It went down like this. I sneak onto the vessel, and everyone was there and awake when I got there. Here is where my problem began. I continued anyway to the mark where my target was, and found her there also standing and very awake. Shen then noticed me with no reaction whatsoever, I waited til she turned around, pulled out my dagger, and back stabbed her in effect killing her. What happened next was the icing on the cake. One of her guards came into the room and saw that she was dead and only said, "I am going to find whoever did this." without any reaction to me whatsoever. I was the only person there who did not belong, and I just walked out like I owned the place afterward. That is disappointing in mission game play. This goes hand in hand with what the original poster was saying. Just seems to be a sense of "unfinished" about the game. However, despite this glaring issue in the game, I still continue to play. I am also surprised that no one has made the connection between me and some of the murders I have committed. It does seem as though made the game a little easier for some reason. In regards to FONV, I never actually finished the game, I stopped at about eighty hours, and never played it again. More over, at that point, I just wanted to repetitiveness to end. I actually hope I do not eventually feel that way about Skyrim. Most of the games of 2011 were a let down in this same way, all you have to do is read their forums. The one thing they did put some effort into is the books you can find. If you have not, try reading them. I was actually hoping for some sort of consequence to my action joining the Dark Brotherhood. But of course, there was no consequence, no one came after me like in( I hate to say it) FO3, when you joined the gunslinger or whatever and the Talon Company Mercs would put out a contract on you and you would randomly be attacked by a crew of mercs. There is none of that in Skyrim, but all these factions exist in the world. Disappointing. I will however continue til I either finish or quit...

The biggest problem is you feel like after everything you do nothing really changes. Oblivions quests were better and Fallout 3's quests were MUCH better. We all said that streamlining wasn't dumbing down but when there are zero consequences to pretty much anything you do I think that is pretty dumbed down. The world is nice and pretty and fun to explore. The Dungeons are incredibly linear this time around though. Same with quests. Lack of choices and consequences.

Agreed. On my second playthrough when I went to Whiterun to warn the Jarl about dragons, and he forced me into helping them kill the dragon, I immediately wanted a choice of "F**k you, deal with your own problems, I'm not getting involved with dragons."
I mean he had enough guards to deal with the dragon.

I really hope one of Skyrim expansions is done by Obsidian. While this studio is also renown for poor QA, they've some talented writers and designers

I second this. While I do not wish to bash the game. Without consequences for your actions it makes the game dull a bit. For example, in The Witcher(probably my favorite series) I decided to help the rebels, and the consequences were very clear throughout the game. Things happened, wars and battles occurred, there were also certain quest lines that were closed to me sense I was now known to be working with the rebels. Once you made your choice, you had go along that quest line and even some side quests were not available(I forgot to mention) as a result of choices made. Once again, there is none of that in Skyrim unfortunately. I can be a part of DB and join the companions at the same time. Seems a bit off and wonky...Maybe it is even possible to be in the DB and join up with the empire although, there is a glaring conflict I will not mention between the two...I don't know what else to say...

I heard they hired some of the old writers, who wrote quests and stuff for Fallout 1 and 2.
Now a Fallout game with FO3's setting and FO:NV's writing would be perfect.
