Skyrim shuts off my laptop...

Post » Wed Feb 13, 2013 1:47 am

Hi Skyrim community members. So I purchased Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn DLCs just yesterday (haven't played Skyrim in a while) and installed them perfectly fine. When I go to run the game however, after five minutes of playing Skyrim shuts off my computer...entirely. My laptop is a couple of years old (Asus G73JH model) but it has been able to run Skyrim without any flaws...and I'm surprised that it's throwing a hissy fit about Skyrim now. All of my drivers are up to date.

I do have mods for Skyrim and I will list them here:

Bethesda HD texture pack 1 & 2
Real Wildelife Skyrim
Blaze of Eventide
Climates of Tamriel Lite Version
Deadly Dragons Loremonger Edition
Magic Font
Crimson Tide v2.2
Dance of Death
Realistic Maps & Roads
Unofficial Skyrim Patch
" " HD Res. Patch
" " Dawnguard Patch
" " Hearthfire Patch
" " Dragonborn Patch
Static Mesh Improvement Mod (part 1 &2)
PISE
Tales of Lycanthropy v1.5
Follower Trap Safety
Xenius' Character Improvement pack
Hoth Trooper's Armor Compilation
Water and Terrain Enhancement Redux
Weightless Tools Pickaxe and Woodcutter
Camping Kit Northern Ranger
SPIKE.esm (I can't recall what this is, if it's even a mod)

Please reply to this post if you have any advice on what I can do to get Skyrim to work again. I have tried making a new character but the same thing happens. My laptop just shuts off.

Sounds like a overheating issue. Are you giving your laptop enough airflow?

Are you noticing any stuttering and choppy video before it shuts down? If you are, your computer is overheating. Check your CPU/GPU temperatures - you should do this anyway even if you're not experiencing the problems I described.

If temps are normal, then it's likely to be some other hardware issue. Someone posted a few weeks back with a similar problem, and the fault ended up being something with the power charger electronics on his motherboard.

SPIKE.esm (I can't recall what this is, if it's even a mod)

Spike.esm is installed by a number of mods such as Immersive Armors, Immersive Weapons and Guard Dialogue Overhaul.

As previously mentioned it could be the GPU overheating. I use MSI Afterburner and have the temperature and frame rate displayed on screen. The data can also be written to a log file.

Shutting down during gaming is caused by hardware issues or driver issues. Although the latter usually forces a restart so this points to cooling.

Invest about $20 in a laptop cooling pad for any gaming. Read the reviews as some are loud and some don't cool well

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_scat_2243862011_ln?rh=n%3A2243862011%2Ck%3Alaptop+cooling+pad&keywords=laptop+cooling+pad&ie=UTF8&qid=1360703461&scn=2243862011&h=277643d5b5e26b2f5588bb45aa0cf6d04a4bd382

Also, get a can of compressed air and see if you can blow out any dust, but this usually requires taking apart the laptop and not something I would do unless the laptop cooling pad does not do the trick.

It can also be power related, but the battery kind of rules that out. Test, see how long you can game on just your battery then see how long you can do non gaming things on your laptop, if it is about 2 hours or more, then the battery is probably OK. Try gaming on just the battery, if it is a problem, it should shut down even sooner that way.
