Skyrim: slowly becoming my fave TES

Post » Mon Oct 22, 2012 10:56 pm

Just for reference, i've played all the TES games, and have been playing them since May 1st 2002; the day Morrowind launched. After about 400 hours of Skyrim, I am beginning to slowly realize that I no longer want to play Morrowind or Oblivion. Skyrim improves on Oblivion like there is no tomorrow, and while Morrowind still has it beaten in lore and story, Skyrim is pretty close. And that's before mods are taken into account. Anywho, just a positive post, and wanted to see if anyone else felt the same vibe.

I too have been playing since May 1, 2002 and I pretty much agree with you. Skyrim is nearly my favorite game in the series. I still favor Morrowind a slight bit, though. But that may change when this new expansion is released.

Skyrim's becoming my favorite ES game for the same reason the Winking Skeever is the best inn in Solitude... it's the ONLY ES game I've played! :P

I thought about trying Oblivion or Morrowind, but after looking at some vids I really don't think I could deal with that. Funny, that those graphics used to be jaw-droppingly awesome back in only a scant few years ago. :P

Pretty close toss-up between morrowind and skyrim but I believe skyrim is better. I think at the time when I was playing morrowind it was a very different game for me like nothing I have ever played before so I really loved it. But I like Skyrim more plus im older so I understand the game alot better. I was 11 when I started playing morrowind and 9 when it was released.

At first I was like OMG SKYRIM SICK when it first came out. And then I was like.. meh.. Morrowind, man. And then I found out how to actually play it and get everything out of it, plus the DLC came out.. and I have more fun with it than I ever did with Oblivion and Morrowind. It's a great game, just misunderstood by RPG purists or random Fallout fans (here's looking at you nutjobs saying Skyrim isn't an RPG).

And the latest DLC should really put the cherry on top.

Glad someone else shares those thoughts! Morrowind was my first TES game, so there is nothing in Skyrim that compares to the first time I landed in Balmora on a rainy night, soaking in all the atmosphere. And pisspoor framerates almost added to the allure of the game, as if saying "this is too much for you, but you'll be playing for years." But seeing Blackreach for the first time in Skyrim was like coming home. Not to the scenery of Morrowind, but certainly to the feeling of wonder I first had when playing Morrowind. Skyrim's shallow quest-lines don't even bother me, because I've always used my imagination in these games anyway.

I have loads of hours in Skyrim. Sometimes I get bored, sometimes I mind glitches and bugs, but at the end of a day, I always come back to it. Therefore, Skyrim is my top 3 fav games of all times. Crash Bandicood still holds the title tho.

I know what you mean. I was like 10 when I first played Morrowind.. needless to say I didn't understand everything or get everything out of it that I could get at the time.

I haven't played any other Elder Scrolls games since Skyrim launched, now I'm curious if I'd feel the same way if I went back and played the old ones.

Doubtful. Not because they aren't good, but because typically because the first TES game you play is the best. I played Daggerfall after Morrowind, and while having loads more of EVERYTHING that Morrowind has, it wasn't nearly as good in my eyes. But still, worth a shot! Skyrim does everything Oblivion does and much better, but Morrowind stands on its own as an experience. I've said it before and i'll say it now: Skyrim is the best game, but Morrowind is the best experience. But...even that opinion of mine is slowly changing.

They would be inaccurate if they said it isn't an RPG. I have not seen a game where they put RPG elements in that of much of Skyrim and call it anything but a RPG. It shouldn't be debatable like at all.

For sure. It's really just people who love their obsolete stats (not that I don't like stats, but a lot of them are pointless) who confuse graphic and combat advancements with merging into the action genre, rather than just progress in the RPG genre.

I think you misunderstood me, I played Morrowind and Oblivion before Skyrim, and I'm just wondering if I wouldn't like them as much now in comparison to Skyrim.

Or maybe you already got that, and I misunderstood your reply...

I agree, there is nothing quite like sitting in Balmora on a rainy day with the music and the background howl. Part of that is nostalgia.. but part of it is just simple atmospheric execution on Bethesda's part.

I did misunderstand you, my bad! I've gone back to both games, and Oblivion is as banol as ever, but Morrowind still grabs me. Morrowind is a much "quieter" game where you take your time and absorb the atmosphere. But when you want some good action mixed with the atmosphere, Morrowind really doesn't deliver. Skyrim delivers on both counts there.

Sure they can get mad over it having a lack of RPG elements the other games had but to straight out call it a action game. I would love to see a action game have the same amount of skills, a level up system, and a skill perk tree. If anyone can show me this action genre game I will shut up.

Definitely, nothing beats Morrowind's atmosphere! Skyrim's combat is much more fun though.

There is a large group of people who believe that lots of numbers make an RPG. They are simply one way of representing what a character is capable of, and Skyrim's "numberless" system does this to the same degree. Skyrim's levelling system is the best since Daggerfall's, imo.

Not to mention the amount of side quests, character customization, lack of linear direction etc. If it plays like an rpg, functions like an rpg, and happens to look good... it's still an rpg.

It's probably my favourite as well, beating Oblivion by a slim margin. And that slim margin is mostly that 'coming home' feeling - Skyrim was my first Elder Scrolls game, and holds a special place in my heart for that.

No game I've played beats Skyrim for world design, IMO. The sheer detail, the hand-crafted feel, the varying regions and the culture to back it all up really make it a brilliant game world. And the game has so many roleplaying opportunities, and things to enchance roleplaying. Skyrim's questlines are probably it's weakest point, but they add a ton of roleplaying opportunities. Take the College of Winterhold for example. From it I've had a scholar, an alchemist and an Arch-Mage who spends most of his life tending to his duties. Questlines end, but roleplaying can last forever.

It's not flawless, but it's flaws seem non-existent as you wander through the Rift on a sunny day, listening to the birds and the music, without a care in the world.

Lol what RPG and Fallout purists? I'm a TES purist it's my favorite series and Skyrim has replaced a lot of TES-RPG elements, not General-RPG elements. TES was a special hybrid anyway. I don't misunderstand what they did, I understood exactly what and why they changed so much and I don't like the changes, but I can still enjoy Skyrim. It's my third favorite after Morrowind and Oblivion (although when I say Oblivion I say Oblivion+OOO, I couldn't play it vanilla). I followed all the pre-release info and interviews, I knew exactly what I was buying, but I still prefer the RPG mechanics of the past games.

How superficial.

Actually Oblivion looks quite good with mods even by todays standards and you can even make Morrowind decent looking on the PC.

Skyrim is a great game on its own, there's a reason I clocked 400+ hours already. I prefer Morrowind anyday though, its story, its culture, its factions loaded with politics and meaningful rivalry make it a deeper experience even in 2012, regardless the inherent outdated gameplay mechanics and visuals.
