Skyrim Strategy Guide(s), Two Editions...

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 4:46 am

I normally don't buy these for games but I decided to get it for a game with this much content so when I went to the midnight launch for BF3 I also asked the guy if I could preorder and pay off the Skyrim Strategy Guide and he said which one? I was under the assumption there was only one at the time but he said there was actually two. A paperback and a Hardcover but he said he didn't know the differences between them other than the soft/hard cover. He made it sound like the hard cover probably didn't come with anything extra... so I went with paperback but now I did a little research on Amazon and apparently there seems to be extras...

What's the difference between them really?

and from another site...
The collectors edition will include;

- Free access to Prima’s digital Skyrim map tool (a $15 value!). Featuring interactive, fully-searchable maps of Skyrim and all major locations so you can instantly find what you’re looking for!

- Hardcover collector’s edition includes a gatefold map of Skyrim and bound-in ribbon bookmarks so you can always find your way through this massive tome!

- 100% Complete! Walkthroughs of every story and side quest help guide you through the deep storyline; we cover all the choices that affect your game! Plus: labeled maps, combat training, character customization tips, and much more!

So the Hardcover has some interactive thingy on the internet but no addition content? I mean yeah bookmarks but i can use whatever to bookmark pages really... or am I missing something? What about the map? Because it says Large map Poster inside for both but the other site said gatefold whatever that means? Is the Hardcover Map a larger poster or is it the same thing?

I'm just not sure what the Hardcover has extra for the increased price, because honestly I don't know what this interactive map thing is, if it's just the game world map in the game why would I need that on the internet too? When i could just view it in-game? If that's all it has extra it's not worth buying over the soft cover.

Interactive map is a map where you can se locations of just about anything... Dungeons, caves etc. rare weapon, legendary weapon. POI and all that... i find it quite entriguing but ill use the uesp for these kinda things if i fell like i missed out on something.... tho i have thought about buying it a half year from release

Yeah but I think it was like a $20 price difference... idk if that's worth it if the actual map in the game is just as good. I mean I don't like spoilers but if i get stuck on something and it's annoying me that's when I'll use the strategy guide for help. Well besides the obvious toilet material reading that they serve

I might just stick with the cheaper edition, as I could care less if it's soft cover not hard... but i hope the hard cover one doesn't have any better info or more content, they are the same amount of pages right? Other than the interactive map pass code addition they should be the same in terms of content.

I'm just curious whether or not the normal edition strategy guide [Paperback] comes with this "gatefold map" of Skyrim and the bound-in ribbon bookmarks...?

yeah i think i might upgrade too. I just hope I can buy a art book from somebody down the road because while I don't want to pay $150 for a statue i won't use the concept art is just amazing and I would love to have that art book and making of dvd. I bought the CE of Oblivion and loved the dvd.

I just ordered the guide. It was $23 and change for the CE and 16 and change for the Paperback.

So, basically, $7 for a book that will last longer and if this online map is anything like the searchable ones the community made for Morrowind or Oblivion, then well worth it.

Yes, I did exactly the same for this reason. A soft cover version will get page seperation pretty quickly on a book this size. My Brady Games Guide for FFXII started blowing pages off the spine on day one......

Yeah I'm going to get the CE one too then... I swear the guy said $40 but then again he said there was no difference so he probably didn't know what he was talking about...

Why is the Hardcover edition double the price? I had payed off the soft cover strategy guide for $22 it said on the receipt. Then I decided to change the preorder and get the Collector's Edition Hardcover one but it's double the price? http://www.gamestop.com/strategy-guides/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-collectors-edition-strategy-guide/93181. Is that right? Why is it double?

I guess I'm just a little confused as to why the huge price difference and what's in it still. I've seen the two blogs on them but they didn't do a very good job saying what's the difference between the two.

http://www.gamestop.com/strategy-guides/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-official-strategy-guide/91077?ref=recpdp&cross=830892 by Prima Publishing is $26.99
http://www.gamestop.com/strategy-guides/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-collectors-edition-strategy-guide/93181 by Prima Publishing is $39.99
http://www.primagames.com/games/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/primaguides/232 (digital web access strategy guide) is $26.99
http://www.primagames.com/games/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/primaguides/243 is $14.99

So basically the CE Hardcover comes with http://www.bethblog.com/index.php/2011/11/07/skyrim-official-strategy-guide-blog-1-something-to-shout-about/ the $26.99 softcover edition does plus the $15 digital map tool. When you add it up it comes out to be about $41.98 which is right there at the listed $39.99 price tag. And that's not costing really anything extra for the nice hard cover rather than soft cover so it should last longer in better condition after use.

Now I see why the price is where it's at. Mainly because of that online map tool which is the only additional content you get right?

I bought the hard cover collectors edition guide from Walmart for less than $30. The only thing with this is it has a delivery date of next Friday which is fine because I don't want to use the guide right away and spoil anything anyways.

Admittedly, I think I've sunk WAY too much cash into this game already. Although, most of my Skyrim CE was paid for with bonus trade in credit at GameStop, so I don't feel bad about that at all. I don't usually do strategy guides either but for a game this massive, I really wanted it. All the time I was playing Oblivion I kind of wished I'd gotten the SG so I decided this time I was going for it. And yeah, I paid the extra cash for the CE Skyrim guide, but I don't do this very often so I justified it this time.

Essentially, pricewise. Plus the collectors edition is hardback (so it will be more versatile). It doesn't have ANY additional content, it gives you a poster to put on your wall, which is folded up. plus it gives you access to something you can then access later on the UESP.

Meh. I'll waste the $40 i guess... Could just pay $26 because I don't see myself using the online map thingy all that much anyways.

Still a bit disappointed I won't be able to get the Art Book aside from overpaying for the $150 edition because of a stupid statue I'de never use...

Need more moneys...

Thats the whole point of me NOT going for the CE edition.

The strategy guide will not get looked at until after my 2nd-3rd playthrough testing out characters to find one that I wanna go the whole hog with, this could take 2-3- weeks for me (only get an hour or 2 a day max)

By this time there will be an interactive map either online or downloadable anyway.

The rest of the extra stuff I can do without anyway

personally im most stoked about the large-scale map. Im not fussed its folded because im just gonna go have it laminated and then stick it on the big blank wall behind my computer with lots of pushpins and a dry erase marker ^_^

ill use the ingame map some, im sure, but how cool to plan your game on a large scale map you can draw on temporarily ^^

To be honest I'm buying this to have something to read while on the john. Plus I don't think looking through the items and stuff is spoiling anything for me. I won't even use the 300+ pages of story walkthroughs, unless I'm really stuck at some point. I haven't bought a strategy guide since I bought Red Dead Redemption and yeah I didn't read most of that book either.

So unless Im reading this wrong (possible). If I buy the digital version, I dont actually get to download an eguide, rather I get access to a website which has the strategy guide?
