Skyrim... why so disappointing?

Post » Sat Sep 15, 2012 1:01 am

Yes skyrim is a great game, yes I have enjoyed it thoroughly (I'm investing in a gaming pc mainly for it!) however the way you are limited is so fricken' annoying,

I made a thread about not being able to play "evil" (I.e not sticking to the rp of being an evil character and killing people) but now I know why. NO ONE DIES.

Yes, NO ONE DIES. I have been playing my new Orc extremest character and stumbled across Ivarstead. Being the badass he is I though it would be a good challenge to take down the guards then kill the rest but this was not the case..

As I plough my way through with my comrade the guards fall one by one.. then I enter the inn and I am faced with even stronger enemies.. weak civilians! I know killing important characters can ruin plot lines but this was beyond a joke. Something like 3/4 in the inn and outside could not die. If I could only knock them out for 10 minutes real time that would suffice. Its boring when they go down, get back up and start attacking you. Your only option really is to run from them! It should be the other way around for god sake.

Any opinions on this? I assume things like this can be fixed on pc? what are the mods capability's with things like this? Can I have more followers and actually kill people?

on pc you can disable the essential tag on npcs and kill them. there are also mods that allow you to have multiple followers.

they probably implemented this essential thing, to protect quest givers and other important people, like shopowners, etc. you can't play as a maniac this way, but i think they did not have this in mind as they made the game.

That is the problem with essential characters, sometimes you just want to kill somebody like a Jarl but nope you can't do that. This is absolutely the reason why I love Fallout New Vegas so much, I can choose whoever I want to knock off. I can't knock off Delphine in Skyrim but I certainly can knock off Ambassador Crocker.

I understand why we have essential characters but really the essential characters should be only killed by the player.

it is annoying but I don't think you can play the game properly and kill everyone, it's one or the other.

Sorry to hear that.

I don't need your pity but thank you, I'm disappointed about the DLC sure but I still play the game and it runs just as smoothly on my PS3 as XBOX just with out the DLC!

There is an option in the .ini to override the essential NPC flag.

Does anyone know the amount of people that will complain when they accidentally kill quest-givers? That's the whole reason that there are essential npcs.

You can't kill innocents in a game, as the level of interactivity will certainly drive you to kill innocents outside of games.

There should be an option 'E.C.K' Essential characters can be killed by you,If you turn it 'on' you get warning that you may not complete some missions properly and may harm your gameplay in future,etc...This way, player would be warned and also be able to kill if he want.

Load Autosave or save file should have fixed it. I'm not going to deny that Skyrim is unpredictable but they could have set the system up where NPC's could only be killed by the player, have a warning that you killed X player and that the prophecy has been changed (Morrowind) and then have some sort of independent route like New Vegas and Morrowind if you somehow killed Delphine because she's an annoying [censored].

They should at least allow us to prank em. The more annoying they are the more you can't kill them.

Yes, Skyrim's reliance on essential NPCs is quite bothersome foolproofing. Or failsafing? Regardless, failure isn't an option, you're a hero dammit! :stare:

Yesterday in New Vegas i killed Caesar the first time. The leader of the faction i chose to oppose. Made into the news with that one, and everyone and their dog has a comment on that  (unlike after assassinating you-know-who in Skyrim :hehe:). Everyone can be killed on that. Except children and the Gun Runners sales robot :hehe: I kinda felt bad for those two kids in the Fort who, with the slaves, were the only ones left alive :hehe:

On the downside sometimes a rogue spawn kills a quest person, resulting in a premature failure. Still i rather take that than a failsafe game.

As people have said, Surely a mod must exist where you can kill essential Npcs. Or maybe even a console command? :S

I've never had that happen, only way I could see that happening is if one of the death squads from NCR/Legion showed up and killed somebody or you intentionally lead an enemy like a Giant Radscorpion back to a village and they go after a person and kill them if they lose sight of you.

The way that NPC's are placed usually makes it fullproof that they won't be killed by anybody but the player, like for example Colonal Moore. No random Caesar spawn is going to put her head on a pike, in Skyrim you have a small chance of that happening but that's why you put in Essential with the exception of the player so that the player can kill them but not the enemies.

What I find ironic is the way Bethesda flagged a bunch of NPCS as essential - presumably to prevent the relatively rare chance of them being killed by a dragon and breaking quests - and then decided to release a DLC that presents a good chance non essential quest related NPCs will be randomly killed by vampires. So they end up taking the choice away from the player to break quests if they so wish, but then decide to introduce a mechanic that kills other quest related NPCs outside of the player's control.
So much for 'you create your own story'.
Which is, let's face it, already 'you create your own story as long as this involves choosing to do or not do at all rigidly linear quests, many of which are forced into your quest log whether you want them to be or not'.
