Sleep mode leads to death?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 6:21 am

Well I can now confirm every time the computer is turned on, the system turns on, the fans come on, the lights come on, then everything immediatly turns off 10 seconds later, and then the whole thing reboots (but with nothing actually, you know, booting). Would I be right in thinking that this is possibly a mobo or psu failure?

Check your RAM. I had this, exactly, happen once, and it was blown RAM.

Ok, resetting the CMOS got the computer working again. I reset the BIOS back to default, but now I;m at the windows login screen. Neither my keyboard or mouse will work (both are wireless) and neither will any other wired mouse or keyboard I have in the house. I dont wanna try turning it off and on again in case I dont get it back on. :S

Any ideas?

Due to all your symptoms I would say it is most likely a RAM issue. RAM can affect entering the BIOS and make BIOS settings not work correctly.

You system could boot correctly occasionally with bad RAM, although it will be very unstable.

Use Memtest86+ to check memory or at least the build in memory diagnostic tool when you can run from a Windows disc (at least from 7).

Sleep mode problems could also be a result of a bad BIOS ROM version, incorrect S3 settings in the BIOS, a bad graphics card device driver/software package, and/or a bad storage controller/hard drive.

Woo! Just had to re-enable USB devices in the comp's BIOS. Everything seems to be working now and I feel slightly less incompetant. I'll run Memtest86 later tonight to see if it was the RAM causing the problem.

Time for a family talk on proper shutdown procedures.

I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death.

Also because I'm either on the computer or in class or asleep myself, so I just turn it off.
