It's a Small World

Just a couple weeks ago at my college graduation ceremony I learned that one of the guys in my class was a cousin of mine. We had started the program at the same time and both ended up with similar jobs after we graduated. What are the odds of that? I am older than him by five years or so. Technically he's my fourth cousin, his Grandfather and my father are cousins which means his Great Grandfather and my grandmother are cousins. It wasn't even that big of a class only about 30 or so people and I interacted with him from time to time.

I am asked "how is it you didn't know" well the last family reunion was 20 years ago and I have a big family how am I supposed to remember all that?

Anyways anything like that happened to you guys?

Anything really that made you think "it really is a small world."

a co worker of my was serving in the us army on Oahu Hawaii for 5 years, he got out and moved back to his home town (where we work together)

On of his favourite places to eat was a restaurant named "Teddy's bigger burgers", which was Hawaii based only at the time he was living there, but around the time he moved back They opened a second store in our town.

The odds of my co worker's favourite burger place opening up its second store in his home town, instead of any of the thousands of towns in all of the other 49 states, is pretty low.

Genealogy is one of my hobbies. Doing online research, I kept running across one guy posting about my family. We compared notes and found our connection through my paternal grandfather (his GG grandmother was the little sister of my G grandmother- 3rd cousin, once removed). It turned out he lives 2 miles from me.

Over the years, we found another connection through my paternal grandmother. A couple years ago I found his name linked to a tree through my maternal grandmother. That's 3 out of 4 grandparents. I warned him if I ever found him linked to my maternal grandfather I would hunt him down and prune the family tree.

Sort of. I have cousins on both of my parents sides who are friends with each other. I guess it's not all that weird really but it's funny to me to see them in pictures together on Facebook.

The world is quite small. Earths sun is much larger, and there are other planets 100x larger than our world. So I know what you mean. ;)
