Smithing is useless?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 7:08 pm

Here is my idea of what I thought it would be

level 24 now...and got smithing around 50-55

So now I unlocked the perk to be able to craft light armor of scaled plates....

But these items you find in dungeons and castles on enemies as well.....
So I got myself a higher level doing so...becuz I leveled smithing...and I got myself making dungeons harder doing so...becuz u dont get ALOT better items....

For example what i SHOULD have done...find the items ingame....and just upgrade them at blacksmith(superior and such) so u dont level so hard....

What I did now is use every material i find on items...and sell those items..

They should of made crafting, speech, and other non-combat based skills level up a different catagory. I foresaw that so I avoided all crafting stuff.

Trust me, when you reach the higher stages of Smithing with the corresponding perk your equipment will exeed all NPCs in the game.

I'm level 40 and I can make much better equipment than I find in dungeons with 100 smithing and all perks.

You can also improve existing items.

Mic it up with enchanting, a couple of fortify smithing items, and you'll have some uber-powerful armour and weps.

Not useless at ALL!

My enchanted legendary Daedric longbow and dragon scale armor begs to differ...It's very useful when paired with enchanting and now that I have both to 100 I have no need for any of the gear I pick up in dungeons. So far it all gets scrapped for cash.

Blacksmithing and enchanting are actually overpowered according to the forums.

I think all the crafting skills are overpowered, at least at higher levels.

I am level 90 smithing, and I can make my weapons and armor incredibly more powerful than the standard versions.

So what everyone is saying until now is that in order for a crafting skill to not make your life harder you should enchant it to 100 right away.
And you are happy with it? Non-combat skills should not offer levels and that was freaking obvious from the start...........

I have 5 characters 30+ 3 of which have leveled non-combat skills and i have tested this extensively.
I'm like terrified to pick a lock, read a book or anything else. Not because the game will become hard - i don't mind difficulty. It's because it svcks getting weaker while getting levels at the same time.......
Destroys my rp, immersion, game experience, everything.

Yes, too bad most people don't have this forsight aka common sense.

Can't wait for a mod that kills level scaling and scales each enemy (as it should be from the start) instead. Game will be even more challenging AND have a sense of progression.

I bet 1 million septims that if you hadn't leveled smithing at all your previous armors would withstand more hits than the improved ones, or you can try it yourself ;)

you are abit wrong bleak.......

if smithing would NOT be scaled into leveling......then EVERYONE would use this skill INTENSE and create super powerfull weapons...so you can really kill anything in dungeons so easily, without having a high fighting skill....

now you have too choose between smithing or fight skills.....or choose both and be weaker in both...but having both lower....then 1 higher....will have the same thing....

What you people fail to understand is...if you level EVERYTHING you will get really higher level soon.....which will unlock perks = makes you alot stronger then 10 levels of a skill
which will give u higher hp/stamina/magicka....

This way you will be alot stronger then being on 1 level lower

For starters it should not be so easy to level if everyone had it that is. For example iron dagger with which everyone levels it should only give skill points at earlier levels.
But even if everyone had it the situation would be far better than it is now. Also at what difficulty are you playing since your problem is that everything will be easy? I imagine you play on master?

I'm not trying to convince you about anything, i'm telling you to just test it if you have the patience and you will convince yourself.

Choose between blacksmith and combat skills? Did you think at all before saying that?
And you think that if you level everything you will become stronger? If you would be a little more comprehensive?

There should be diminishing returns for crafting iron. I cannot remember but I'm very sure that alchemy has diminishing returns as well. I think this is one reason why blacksmithing is powerful, it is too easy and cheap to level.

Currently smithing is completely game-breaking actually. If you max your smithing to 100, wear all +smithing items, pop a smithing pot & craft an item its just absurd. I saw a bow someone took a screenshot of with a base damage of like 270. I have one of the best bows in the game & it does like 90 base damage. See a difference? I also saw someone with a 2H axe that had 480 base damage. Add enchanting as well & you can 1 shot dragons.

I dont think that leveling smithng....will effect you becoming less weak...becuz you will be able to craft better items...you get BETTER weapons which you use for combat...so having combat + smithing will work pretty good

I play on master....this is the most difficult setting isnt it? Shouldnt that make it even harder for me? (thats what you say at least...)

I think this system is designed so that you are not able to use every single skill....from restoration to smithing from sneaking to blunt and from enchanting to alcemy...because then u will get really high level soon and you will still be weak....

so now you have to choose between 5 skills out of 20(dont know how many there are exactly) in stead of alll....

but I think smithing will belong to combat skills...

Your numbers are........ unreal http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Smithing
And his numbers were coming from enchanting not smithing. And that's end-game enchanting with almost full enchants and it happens because of stacking % values mostly.

Yea lol so test it yourself, who is stronger - the one with the better weapons or the one who hasn't leveled up smithing at all? Go ahead test it.

That is most definitely an exploit rather than a design thing. Smithing obviously should cap at 100, and the only reason why overpowered gear can be crafted are due to +smithing items and +smithing potions to push it way beyond 100.

Pretty sure if you only craft gear where your skill is at 100, the things you make would not be too powerful and the advantage you get is reasonable.

As for me, I think I can level my smithing to 100 with a clear conscience. If people wish to exploit the game and then ruin the game for themselves, that is their choice.

Aye, smithing is the best skill I have. And the only one I've bothered maxing out yet. Made a full Dragonplate set yesterday, and upgraded it to Legendary. I currently have 489 armor rating (with shield). My Ebony sword probably doubled in damage from stock to legendary status.

In short, Smithing is a great skill if you bother to level it up and get the perks.

Be careful when power-leveling smithing, enchanting and alchemy. You'll have great gear as a result, but may lack the skills/perks to use it worth a damn. Some of the enemies the game chucks at you at level 20+ freaking hurt and can tear through a 400 armor rating like it's butter.

I'm level 30, 70 heavy armor and 72 1H. Only problems I have are against mages. I play on Adept / Expert (been conditioning myself for Expert, but I'm still switching now and again). It's weird though; sometimes the game is way too easy, other times it's really punishing.

Yes - I realize I could play at Master to alleviate the easy parts. I guess I'm not hardcoe enough to do that yet.

But I agree that power leveling one skill early on might be a bad idea.

I love blacksmithing cause it allows me to improve my armor and weapons on my warrior. I craft my armor myself (getting ebony set as soon as I get enough ores)

Ebony looks absolutely badass, I crafted a full set including the 2h Axe for my new melee follower earlier today. She looks like a mean killing machine now (and she almost managed to solo a giant at the expert difficulty!).
