Snow melts of rocks.

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:46 am

Snow melts off rocks.

Like when you shoot a fireball at it, which is awesome.

Even on the 360/ PS3.

I didn't know this.

That is all.

Sounds more likely that the fire effect leaves a temporary mark on objects than that you actually get snow melting... But who knows. I don't.

I doubt it. Snowy rocks is probably a texture. Melting the snow would mean an extra layer of a textured entity in the game, and since there's A LOT of snow, this would take up incredible amounts of memory. Maybe some rocks, but not all. Unless you have a source.

The guys that start these threads on snow and rain can't give you the source. It's against the rules. They are just so full of newly watched vids, they are about to burst if they don't tell something.

Then he could tell us he saw it in a secret video. Comming in here and claim that snow can melt (which I highly doubt) is pretty ridiculous when we're supposed to just take his word for it..

Snow is dynamic. It accumulates almost naturally. So, in a way it is temporary...until the next snowfall.

Nope, the snow is dynamic in this game. There are plenty of sources... Search for anything years old. ;)

Whether it's just a texture replacement or not, does it really matter?

It still melts in its own way.

Jeez, some people are really hard to please.

And by the way, if you doubt what I'm saying then it's your loss.

Guess we'll have to wait till the game releases to find out........... :whistling:

Bethesda says lots of things that may or may not be exaggerations.

They said there is a random quest radiant AI... It is in there. They said that water has a flow... It does.. I'm willing to believe the snow accumulation, since I have seen things that I would not be able to post links to.

I'm very much a negative nancy, but there is a point where negative nanciism gets taken too far. :)

So far, the only lie I have seen them actually make is that werewolves were not in the game.

Bethesda has said several times that snow is a shader effect - when it snows, the snow settles on the ground. It's not a texture swap but a shader. It stands to reason that they really COULD melt the snow by deleting a portion of the shader to reveal the underlying surface

The shader effect thing I didn't know.. That is neat. Thanks for telling us.

I love how trudging through a blizzard will now actually feel like you are trudging through a blizzard. Snow, wind, etc...

I read a preview where even just trudging through snow on the ground can slow you down pretty good.

I also wonder if by proxy ice magic can create new snow - I loved kicking up a squall of AoE freezing fog in Oblivion with cold spells and a customised ice storm spell. It'd make my day if cold magic coats the ground in snow or ice xD

The two things are not mutually exclusive. Ever used the terrain editor of TES? Several layer of textures are applied using a transparency mask. It would be very easy to have another mask for snow that gets opaque when the terrain is covered in snow and transparent when snow has melt away. From the footage seen, snow being a solid 3D mesh is improbable, though I could be wrong.

Good point, and possible..

Though the last guy said it isn't a 3d mesh, but a shader effect. Some areas may indeed have snow texture under the shader snow.

I agree with you.
Perhaps temporal decals are placed over object with snow shader, will be strange to see such shader will completely removed from whole object from one fireball.

If he told you he saw it in a secret video, how would that make it any more credible?

NOTHING that any one is talking about on this forum can be "confirmed" at this time in a credible way, because it's explicitly against the rules. Read the stickies.
