Solution for freezes (ATI)

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:29 pm

Hi there,

I bought Rage (european anarchy edition) on tuesday, tried it yesterday, and I got these problems :

- freezes for several seconds every 1 min or so (the sound is muted for a few seconds after each freeze)
- textures appearing when I turn the head in the game
- severe screen tearing (vsync lack)

So, after HOURS of tuning this is what I did, and it fu... works, NOT A SINGLE freeze since 30min of gaming !

1) installed the new catalyst 11.10 preview 2 released yesterday (previously I had the 11.8)

2) created the missing dir for the 1GB cache on the C drive :

C:\Users\mercenar\AppData\Local\Id Software\Rage

(after first launch, the game created 2 files in there)

3) added the +r_swapInterval 1 in the launch options of the game in steam (for vsync)

4) stop the service "AMD external events" in the services in control panel, this useless thing is the bastard in charge of the freezes !

BTW, I never install the catalyst control panel, just the drivers. I always did that, and never got a problem.

My specs :

Windows 7 pro 64
Ati Radeon HD 4890 PCI-E 1 GB DDR5
4 Gb RAM DDR3 1333Mhz Kingston
Intel Core i7-860 quad core 2.8 Ghz 8Mb cache
Motherboard ASUS P7P55D LE
HDD Western Digital 1 Terabyte Sata2 64Mb cache 7200 RPM
Soundblaster XFI Fatality Xtreme Gamer 64M

Hope this helps all ATI users !

Note : if u are under XP, the service causing trouble is "ati hotkey poller". When DOOM3 was released back in the days, I was on XP, and this service caused the game to crash by overheating the PC (100% CPU). I guess the AMD external events is the new name for THIS [censored] under Win7 !

Thanks for the info

This almost worked for me, still crashes above 1366 X 768 and textures sometimes fail to load between areas but its now a little more stable. Stopping AMD external events helped enormously!
Used to crash If I looked at certain objects, such as the radio tower after you repair it.

Also found getting rid of the video folder helps, plus it saves time reloading the game after it crashes again.

ati 6950

2) created the missing dir for the 1GB cache on the C drive : ?

How did you do the above?

its confusing but would like to do it to see if it fixes my rage pc issues.

Assuming you use Windows 7....

Navigate to c:/users/your username/appdata/local and create a folder named "id software" minus the quotations. Inside this new folder create another folder called "rage" minus the quotations. Done.

If you can't see the Appdata folder you need to enable seeing hidden files/folders in your folder options.

Just make the following folder:

C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\id software\rage

next time you start up rage it will put two files in there, one of them is 1GB big so make sure you have space

Have tried all this now and still have same issue... Freezes and sound stutter making the game unplayable!

Just tried it and no effect. Although freezes became lighter, less frequent, but still unplayable.

It didnt work for me too at first (I did everything in the first post). Then I comepletely removed all AMD drivers and installed rage performance drivers, but unchecked everything that is posible exept for AMD display drivers.

Now it works.

Hope i helped someone.

Same here mate.
I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WHERE IT WOULD FREEZE FOR A 2-8 SECONDS THEN GOOD FOR 2. I SAW THAT ONE OF MY 2 CORES WAS SURGING BETWEEN 90 AND 100% WITH THESE FREEZES. WHILE I HAVE A DUAL CORE (FOR NOW) IT IS A DEACTIVATED QUAD. THE 3RD AND FOURTH CORES ARE DEFECTIVE ON MINE BUT THE 3RD CORE DOES WORK OK. SO I ACTIVATED IT AN DECLOCKED ALL 3 AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS NOW. THE TEXTURING EVEN AFTER THE UPDATES STILL ARENT FANTSIC BUT AFTER THEY RELEASE THE CROSSFIRE PATCH/UPDATE I HOPE IT WILL BE BETTER.

i Added the 2 cache files

then set the launch options.. and to my amazement it WORKED not a single freeze for awhile.. BUT ... i had no game sound, wasn't my speakers or my computer because the load up screens for gamesas and ID software both had sound. i then quit the game to try to fix the no sound (which i did nothing because nothing was wrong) booted the game back up had sound ... and FREEZES

thanks for giving me my 30 of freezeles gameplay. :'| (

hello everyone,

My spec is

amd II x2 240 oc at 3ghz
mother board asus (don't remember name)
GC asus 4770
4go ddr3 corsair

I gotten a lot of troubles when i started to play (textures, freeze....all i hate from a ID game :P). On the steam forum i found something that worked for me.

I removed my old catalyst and installed the 11.10

in the CCC i checked "use parameter from program" and didn't desactivate the catalyst A.I

And for finish in steam in the "set launch option" i added some command:

+com_skipIntroVideo 1 +seta com_allowconsole 1 +vt_maxPPF 8 +cvaradd g_fov 20 +jobs_numThreads 0 (i think the jobs_numThreads changed my life :D)

If this can help some ati user say thx to the guys from steam forum :) because the game really work fine now (aa 2x or 4x with aniso 8x, and it's still nice to play for my little comp)

But this didn"t fixed the multyplayer part of the game (always got freeze, lag :s)

Where is the "use parameters from program option" exactly in CCC?

Hi guys, for those of you who have tried all the above and still cannot play, try this:

Add "+jobs_numThreads 0" to target line in Rage shortcut? properties

I suspect is has something to do with the cores. I am running a core 2 duo 2.6, and none of the above worked. Until I tried this one last thing.

This is my complete launch line, some of it might help performance for others perhaps...
C:\games\rage\Rage.exe +cvaradd g_fov 12 +com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +image_anisotropy 16 +image_usecompression 0 +g_showplayershadow 1 +m_smooth 0 +jobs_numThreads 0

Where 'c:\games\rage' is my custom install directory. Normally it shoots head first like a fetus into program files...
