A solution for the Glare issues with the 5830 Cards

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 1:37 am

So like many others who have managed to get the game working only to have the horrible glare issues that make the game unplayable I think I may have a solution.

After about 3 weeks of trial and error I think I have isolated the issue with the Radeon 5830 Cards. After ruling out various hardware through trial and error issues I beleive it is a driver solution.

Right now I have the preview driver 3 installed. And up until now I was using the atioglxx.dll driver fix from 11.6. Which allowed the game to work but had the aformentioned glare issues. My pics here should show what I was facing. It was making the game at parts completely unplayable.

Here are the screenshots for reference.

I tried to pull the .dll file from other versions of drivers but the only one that got the game running was the 11.8 Driver.

Go ahead and extract the .dll. (You don't need to install the drivers as a whole) and place it in the Rage folder. Hope this helps some of you who are having glare issues. With this driver the game is running as intended for me. Good FPS and NO GLARE!!!

By the way my computer specs are:

Windows 7 64bit
AMD Phenom x6 1100 3.3 ghz
ATI HD 5830 1GB
4 GB RAM

Hey Mate , Actually this is not a 5830 problem only , But i like to think of it more as a xx30's problem .. As i am on ATI 4730 and having the same exact problem , Anywayz .. Can you tell me exactly how to extract the .dll without installing the driver?

Just use 7zip to extract the driver. Then in the extracted directory, search for "atioglxx.dl_" and extract that aswell with 7zip - that will give you the "atioglxx.dll" file that you should put into the RAGE directory on Steam

Ye , Consider me a noob but i still cannot find it lol , Can you just upload it somewhere please?

I found 2 atioglxx.dl_ but in different folders , One under W7_INF and one under W76A_INF.

Which should i extract and use?

Unpack the driver to a directory -> go into the directory
EG: C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_11.8_Preview_driver_OpenGL_4.2_beta\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\B123499

open a CMD window in that directory and type "expand atiogl.dl_ atiogl.dll" <- that will expand the dl_ to a full dll file that can be used.

compact atioglxx.dll atiogl.dl_ <-- will make the full dll a dl_ file again (compressed dll file)

hope this is usefull

Thanks mate , that was useful .

Anywayz sadly this did not fix my glare problems , It just made the game run at 20FPS with the glare problems still present .

I will remind you again though that i am on ATI 4730 so dunno if this will fix 5830.

Sorry to hear that it doesn't work, are you on the Preview 3 drivers?

steam forums came to my rescue once again! the following fixed my glare problems.

[empirical evidence] A Complete Guide to Tweaking Rage

Post Processing
r_skipGlare
default value: 0

One of the first things you'll notice in this game are the green shadows you get sometimes. Rage uses some very heavy-handed post processing in some areas. You can disable this effect, but you may not want to. Some areas look better with the effect switched on.

Here's the solution: set a button on the keyboard to switch the effect on and off at will. Open your default.cfg file and add this line after the 'unbindall' command:

bind x toggle r_skipGlare

Now you can press X at any time to turn off post-processing. There are some side effects, like explosions looking less interesting, and neon lights no longer having a glow effect around them.

set launch options....
vt_maxPPF 32 for quad core
vt_maxPPF 16 or 8 for dual core
....
the vt_maxPPF is normally set for 128..... O.o

Thanks ksb1082, the .DLL provided is a lot better and I have good frame rates. It has made the game playable for me.

WHY ATI/BETHESDA HAS NOT MENTIONED THIS BEFORE IS A JOKE!!!!
