I have just followed the amazing advice given in the thread titled "bizarre fix 2: how i got rage to work", and after weeks of the game basically just being a stuttering mess that froze every 5 seconds and was basically unplayable, I have finally gotten the game to a playable state. The graphics are perfect for me, I can actually play the game at a decent framerate, but after about 15 minutes of playtime some issues begin to arrise without any real explanation.
Were talking silky smooth gameplay for 15 minutes, and then it decides to do its famous 5 second freeze only this time it is not constant. After this freeze occurs, I can no longer aim down sights without the game freezing for a split second making the gun play really sluggish. There is also a steady increase in stuttering which makes me think the video memory is filling up when it shouldnt be or something? The textures all still seem to appear fine.
Is there anything I can tweak to prevent this from happening? LIke I said, all seems to be well for a short period of time which makes me think my rig can totally handle the game, but it doesn't seem to sustain the performance. Temperature levels dont dramatically increase so I don't suspect overheating.
I have the following settings in my launcher: +cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +seta com_allowconsole 1 +vt_maxPPF 8
my rageconfig file is as follows:
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 8192
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 8192
vt_pageimagesizeunique 8192
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192
vt_restart
vt_maxPPF 8
In game settings: AF set to low, AA off, V-sync ON, texture cache "undefined"
and im running the game in compatability mode for Win 98. Don't ask me why, it just seems to work better that way. I also have non essential programs closed down, desktop gfx acceleration turned off, and no interferance from CCC.
