Some awful textures are NOT part of the glitch

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 9:55 pm

I haven't really experienced some of the problems others are complaining of so i cant comment. I'm referring to the god awful up-close 2dimensional snow, moss, grass textures that cover many of walls and rocks in skyrim. It appears to sit unconnected to the wall, completely flat and without any detail. Obviously i thought it MUST be the xbox specific 'glitch' every1s talking about. Well its not... its actually a design decision, because ive just rented the ps3 version and the textures are exactly the same. How can bethesda seriously release a product in 2011 that would have looked ugly on the ps1. I can't believe someone at bethesda actually said okay to this, especially after all the promises of 'overwhelming you with detail'! For anyone who doesn't know what i'm talking about, go up close to any wall or rock that has snow on it (the big structure at bleak falls barrow is where i first noticed it) and you'll see its actually a kind of white glossy paint. It's so immersion breaking to have so much amazing scenery covered in the stuff. Its like finding stonehenge covered in graffiti.

I have to agree with that, tha whole dynamic generated snow that paints the textures looks like a joke upcloce but interesting from afar.I guess the problem is the lack of detail on it.It's too glossy.

Well, I don't like making excuses for developers but our consoles are aged hardware and this is a complex open world game without many pre-rendered things. It's a vast area where almost everything you see on the horizon and beyond can be accessed. So the level of detail can't be very high. I don't think it is immersion breaking, actually immersion is this game's strongest point. The beautiful music, setting and atmosphere.

I'm pretty sure that they could take a different approach on the snow effect even on our old hardware.Just wait till you visit a cave covered with snow with green walls. It's horrible.Overall the game looks wonderful though.

Thank god I am buying the PC version. Hopefully none of this is apparent on that copy on ultra or high :/. I do love the xbox version and was hoping this problem was down to the texture bug but thanks for the notice anyways :/.

Thanks for the heads up. I was assuming the weird painted on snow was part of the glitch. Another thing I kept noticing is metal that is supposed to be "rusted", like in the opening sequence when you run into the room with torture cages for your first lock pick. That texture never looks right to me either. The game is truly awesome despite my complaints. If these are sacrifices that needed to be made to make the game, I think it was worth it. I just wish bethesda was a little more forthcoming in sharing info. Just being more specific about the glitch, what was a sacrifice to make the game better, and how long it might take to get fixed or never fixed would p probably go a long way towards cutting back on all the misinformation floating around.

Have managed to get into the game now however n its awesome, I just try not to focus on it. 1 big difference between 360 n ps3 however is performance. xbox runs super smooth but ps3 framerates are poor in comparison n lighting n shadows tend to flicker. Glad i only rented ps3 version - seems to be a general rule...if you own both consoles then always get cross platform games on 360

The dynamic snow thing was complete BS anyway.

I'm also at the point now where I'm not sure if the glitch has cropped up again for me or whether a certain part of the environment is supposed to look how it does. In fact, I just made a topic about it and a certain part of the environment I'm not sure about. If you could check it out and let me know I'd appreciate it. I just don't know whether the glitch has cropped up again or not :shakehead:

Oh yeah, here's the topic with pics inside and issue I'm on about.

Yeah, the rust & snow do look a bit "off" up close, and I'm seeing more repeating textures than I did in Oblivion, but Skyrim has got to be around 2.5 times bigger, so I'm totally willing to excuse these shortcomings.

The actual BUGS, however... :shakehead:

I heard they aimed to make a game that would still look good on a next-gen console. Is that an excuse?
