So far, PvP in TESO looks very promising. From what I have read, it seems that it may be better than any other RPG.
However, I am afraid it may not be quite as good as the best shooter PvP games.
In my opinion, the best PvP game, at this moment, is Planetside 2 (PS2).
I am very pleased to read that TESO pvp appears similiar to PS2.
Here is what I think makes good PvP:
1. Open World: please make cyrodiil into a huge area. Ideally, even larger than PS2 maps.
2. Three factions
3. first person view. Personally, I think third person view should be disabled because it gives an advantage. If there is a third person view, then unfortunately, I must use it, to remain competitive with other pvp players. Please disable third person view,at least in PvP. The mmo crowd will be unhappy. The ESO crowd will love it. We don't need another third person mmo with typical mmo combat. Be careful about catering to the mmo crowd, or you may lose the ESO crowd.
4. no auto aiming please. All attacks must be aimed.
5. please turn on friendly fire. Why? because it's realistic and makes combat more tactical and challenging. The damage caused by friendly fire can be decreased if full damage is too difficult for many players. Friendly fire in a RPG mmo will put TESO light years ahead of other mmo's.
6. Little or no hotbar.
7. PvP needs interesting goals, other than killing players, such as capture territory and resources.
8 . The difference between high level/gear and low level/gear should be minimized. One of the worst aspects of RPG pvp (vs shooter PvP) is that RPG pvp depends too much on level and gear. RPG pvp often seems very unbalanced compared to Shooter pvp. There are already plenty of gear2win RPG pvp games. Let's do something different this time.
9. Little or no death penalty. Absolutely, no loss of gear. Body looting will create an incentive to cheat/exploit/hack to kill high level players, in order to gear up quickly. Professional gold sellers, hackers, exploiters will earn real world money by looting bodies and selling the gear. Do not make a game which requires good gear to achieve success ... and then take that gear away, when we die.
10. Be careful with invisibility and sneaking. It's not fun to fight invisible enemies. Invisible or stealthed players should be targetable. In Planetside 2, I kill invisible players with ease. How? because invisible players are not 100% invisible, and because PS2 allows me to aim and shoot at anything. On the other hand, in neverwinter online, even if you guess the location of a stealthed player, you still can't aim at his location. Stealth should not give resistance to targeting or resistance to damage. At the very least, invisible players should still make footstep sounds.
