Some tips for an MMO from a veteran.

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 10:12 pm

Please read I've got ALOT of experience in MMO’s. (Pass to somebody higher up)

You guys announced you’re going to create elder scrolls online; here are some of my tips.

From somebody who's played MMO's since they were 11 years old (Ultima Online, WoW to name a few) and is now 25 I want to share some tips to make this the best MMO’s that’s going to be.

Please don't copy the modern MMO's they've all copied each other and it's just a big copy fest. The play style is dull and is designed to keep you dragging on this is extremely boring.

Keep the original elements of Skyrim, make player corpses loot-able and PVP open world, not instantiated as that ruins it and makes the lands empty.

Open world PVP really adds to the thrill of the game, imagine taking the risk to go out of the city and mine in an area full of rare minerals and lots of PVP players hunting you for those minerals, it really makes your heart race.

Skills should be something like Ultima with 700 skills points being the maximum, players should be able to mix and match skills of any type leading to truly unique classes and skilful gameplay.

DON’T limit players to classes like “Mage”, “Warrior” this has been done hundreds of times and is fairly boring now.

Houses should be customizable, place able and items should be place able within the house, rare items you’ve found to show off. Player created shops! Also houses shouldn’t be instanced as this I find destroys the “feel” to the game. Imagine having your house full of rares and your friends coming into your house for a meeting. (Maybe poison the food and steel there stuff for the thrill, unless they kill you first). Having the ability to fire at somebody out of a house would be a pretty neat feature. (castles, wars, etc etc)

Dungeons should be open world, this leads to guild wars and more excitement to the game!

Don't limit players to factions, let them join new factions thought the likes of large guilds, maybe learn something from Eve Online here.

If any of your team members played early Ultima Online (Before Age of Shadows) please consult them personally with ideas, Ultima Online but with Skyrim graphics and elements WILL BE the ultimate MMO and people will flock in their millions to play it I guarantee it.

Anyhow I’ve got thousands of other ideas, if you ever want to contact me simply email.

Thanks for reading

You're not the only person with MMO experience on these forums, and I bet the people at Zenimax Online probably have a little MMO experience as well. :P

Storm-shout, most of the modern MMO's are bad clones with the same boring remedy. I REALLY want them to get this one right.

But OP is right, if they keep the content of the TES sp series like Oblivion and Skyrim, it will turn to be a very good sandbox ffa mmorpg.
Since 1998 UO times, there isn't a decent sandbox out here, Darkfall and MO have tryed this card but they failed because they have a small team of developers and a low budget, and not good ideas.

So you think you are an Expert on MMORPGS? Yet you don't seam to know the Director of this Game, Matt Frior (Producer of the best PVP MMORPG of the last Decade and on a plus side he left Mythic on the Day EA took over). If anyone can call himself an Expert than its that guy.

I'm just using my common sense, well I hope he's up to it because there's not a decent MMO around at the moment, they've all copied each other or turned into a noobs game. The moment I play this in he distant future, If I even sense a hint of wow clonness I will uninstall it and never return.

There seem to be a lot of good people on the Zenimax Online team, including some that worked on UO - I think they know the good stuff in and out. Let's just hope they take it to heart.

I really do because it would simply be the best MMO ever made. I also hope they don't dumb it down.

Many of your ideas are horrible.
"Player created shops! Also houses shouldn’t be instanced as this I find destroys the “feel” to the game. Imagine having your house full of rares and your friends coming into your house for a meeting. (Maybe poison the food and steel there stuff for the thrill, unless they kill you first)" - That can ruin a lot of the economy and thieving and killing of the owners will just be rediculous.

"Open world PVP really adds to the thrill of the game, imagine taking the risk to go out of the city and mine in an area full of rare minerals and lots of PVP players hunting you for those minerals, it really makes your heart race." - This is horrible, you can basically never go outside, because everyone will be after you. That will not be very TES like at all.

1 - House owners would have the ability to "lock down" items.
2 - I don't think so, I think the rarer the mineral the more PVP's but that just add's excitement. Almost all modern MMO's minerals are far to easy to get (Just requires time, no risk.). With this method, for valuables you could have a squad or just take a risk and run out with a pick axe.
Of course a bank will be a must with all your items in a personal vault, probably only viewable in city banks (this also creates a common trading place which is great).

Yeh, so did Bioware who had Mythic on their team. And what did they do? Make another WoW clone and make all the same mistakes.

Yeah I don't understand why this seems to be the standard way of creating an MMO, it's crap. Everyone is saying GW2 is the "next-gen", well I say it's the "next-gen" of crap wow clones.
They should learn from EVE online which the openness and risk taking and UO with a truly sandboxable world (from 1998..).

Is there anyway anyone important will read this?

Anyone important to the development of the MMO you mean? No not likely at all. There are lots of regular important people here though....

As for housing? They said "Zenimax has no plans to let you accrue real estate." They also claimed it was too hard to implement housing in a way that fans expect. Honestly most of what they say is like "Well we got these really cool ideas on how to fix many of the problems associated with MMOs, but we just cannot figure out how to get them working yet! Shucks right?!"

I have a feeling that Zenimax will just create another wow clone. If a game that's +10 years old (I know 2d) can have an open world with customised houses etc etc then I can't see why they can't do it now.

Dear god, OP. Please don't read the Game Informer article. You'll be reduced to tears.

All fantastic points, none of them being implemented. It is, unfortunately, another WoW clone. They specifically state that it is a WoW clone.

I'm angry. I'm going to start a kickstarer for a new sandboxed MMO. It's about time we had one because at the moment there's just been a sea of crap since origional Ultima Online.

Like every other MMo game , they are trying to steal all the WoW players. And all those fail badly with it...
