Right but it could be an issue with the drive itself unable to read the disc for what ever reason, it's making sense in my head but I'm having a hard time writing why.

It goes back to your saying that everything is different, certain drives might be able to read certain things better than others. Asides from cleaning the disc and trying, I can't think of anything else that can be done.
Edit: I see Chris has posted while I was writing up this post, in-case you can't get a new copy of the game and none of the solutions work, you can pick up a digital copy from Good Old Games.
