Yeeah. Found the Shellbug in the Forgotten Vale cave this time around as DG (skipped right through on my Vampire first play) I'd been curious about the 'Mine 4 bug' shellbug chitin, so I saved and went ahead and mined away.
Quite possibly the fastest reload I've ever done, heh.
Anyone else find they feel terrible about hurting the Shellbugs?
I don't even have Dawnguard and I cringe at the thought of hurting these innocent bugs. They lived in peace for centuries and now Dovahkiin comes, a hero and saviour of the world, and ruthlessly murders them just so she can forge a helmet she'll probably never use anyway.

It's just being refitted for a more noble cause.
My desires.
That was enough for me to justify it. Actually, I never thought about it until this thread, but it is after all, just a bug..
Squish it. Make a helmet out of its corpse. Move along.
I'm the type that smiles in anticipation as lobsters start to make lovely little screaming noises when you put them in boiling water. The only thing saving Shelly at the moment is my inability to find the darn thing. I plan to make Cicero wear Shelly as a hat!

But there are only two shellbugs in all of Skyrim. It feels wrong to kill them, even if they respawn (do they? I have no idea.) They're peaceful too. I don't like killing giants because they're intelligent and even have their own language (or at least used to), but when they attack me I don't hesitate to defend myself. Shellbugs, however, aren't aggresive.
Look at it this way, if there are only two, and they live that far away they are obviously evolutionary dead ends and living a lonely useless existence until you come along and suggest they might be useful for something.
I mined it for a couple of hits and then exited. I could see where this was going, and there was no way I wanted to kill it. It reminded me of the silt striders in Morrowind, and the Shellbugs in Forgotten Vale also make a cool sound. So, anyway, I got the material, but didn't kill the bug. (I don't kill Chauruses if I can help it either).

According to this definition I'm an evolutionary dead end too, so I sympathize with shellbugs
