Personally, I'd like to be attacked by these 'followers' of the Dragon Priest/Dragonborn. On them will be a letter, starting the DLC/quest.

Why bother with a letter. Have the quest start to find out who has attacked you and why? Turn it in to a detective quest that starts the whole thing off. It'd certainly be different from past methods.

It's already pretty clear that we'll have to start (and possibly finish) the main questline, but a second, largely unrelated questline that's divergent from several playstyles? I doubt it.

its not that far out there from bethesda's past

in dawnguard you had to get the dragon elder scroll that you have to have for the mainquest and dawnguard is in no way related to the main quest
