Special Powers: Do You Use Them?

Post » Thu Feb 28, 2013 9:43 pm

I have played quite a few Nords in Skyrim. Not once have I used the Nordic ability:Battle Cry. Ever. I have played other races, also, and have yet to use any of their racial perks. Wait, my high elf did use make of his Highborn Perk often.

I have my shouts always selected and never bother to go menu jumping to change out to racial abilities. I also don't use any other of the special abilities one can get in the game like the Nightingale abilities. I probably would, if it weren't a choice and messy change with the UI. I know I am lazy :)

Do others use their racial abilities? How effective are they? Is using the ability more of an RP thing? Does it really affect the game significantly once per day?

What are your thoughts?

Considering I play as an Imperial, no.

The only powers I've ever used are Khajiit's Night Eye (I use a realistic lighting mod so this actually comes in handier than you'd think), Orc's Berserker Rage (probably the best racial power in the game to be honest) and High Elf's Highborn.

The rest are either really lackluster or I've simply not played as the race to see what they have. Berserker Rage is borderline OP since you take half damage while dishing out double. Going toe to toe with giants at level 5 and winning is pretty hilarious. My Nord Warrior (level 63) hasn't used his racial once.

That being said I pretty much only play as human races so I don't actually really get to use any of the above on serious playthroughs.

I never use Battlecry and usually always play a Nord. However I do not want my enemies to flee. It makes it harder to kill them if they run away.......

I used battlecry with one of my nord characters a few times when he was very low level.

Otherwise the special powers are utterly useless to me, and I've played Nord, Orc, Dunmer and Altmer.

I forgot about it and when I went back to my game after a few weeks of not playing I saw Battlecry in the powers section and wondered 'when did I get that power'?

How I see it. 1 being best and going down from there.

Better:
#1 Berserker Rage- Orc / Constant use in almost any situation.
#2 Hist skin- Argonian / Constant use against tougher enemies.
#3 Adrenaline Rush- Redguard / Consistent use against other High lvl NPCs for stun locking.
#4 Highborn- High Elf / Occasional use against a Dragon, or undead.

Lesser:
#1 khajiit claws- Khajiit / reasonable use, When I want a kill cam.
#2 Battle Cry- Nord / Used When I'm on a last stand and have no other alternative.
#3 Ancestors Wrath- Dunmer / aesthetic use more or less. Considerable use against multiple Draugr.
#4 Dragon Skin- Breton / Never use unless running antronach stone, albeit rarely.
#5 Voice of The Emperor- Imperial / Never use, unless I want to talk to 'bandits', or if a stage 4 vampire and I don't want to be a murderer.
#6 Call Animal- Bosmer / Only used when fighting in giant camps.

I used battlecry a lot in the early levels. It's great when you're out of potions.

I use Ancestor's Wrath a lot. That's a solid power, always does what it says.

Yeah I've got all kinds of things listed under Powers that I never use...
(At least 6 powers now, or maybe more.)
I guess mostly they're useful right at the start of the game when your guy's a n00bie.

Actually hold on! There is a power I have that turns anybody aggressive.
It's extremely useful if you ever wish to own Shadowmere...

For me, I rarely use the Argonian's Hist Skin ability. As for the other races special powers, I never used them.

Most of them are very situational. However, if used at the right moment, they are game changers.

Imperial 'Voice of the Emperor' and Nord 'Battle Cry' are great if you're outnumbered and outmatched by any group of humans, be they mages, bandits, or others. Of course, they are less than useful against animals or undead.

Altmer and Orc abilities are very useful, as is Night-Eye for Khajiit, since it's more of a toggle than a once-per-day power.

Argonian, Bosmer, and Redguard passive abilities are better than their powers.

Dunmer 'Ancestor's Wrath' is pretty handy in a pinch, too.

Just think. If you could use these powers at will, they would be WAY overpowered. But once-per-day and you sometimes forget you even have them, haha.

Like others have said I will use Battle Cry at low levels especially if I find myself overwhelmed by multiple enemies. Time to regroup and recover, or head for a more populated area where I might find some assistance depending on who the enemies are.

By the time I get to a higher level I really don't use it any more, maybe if I was playing a character that had nothing else to rely on in situations like that. But by then I've usually got shouts and/or spells and/or better overall skills so it's not needed, and those other things aren't usually "once a day" possibilities. And as someone else also said, there's a point where making your enemies run away becomes counterproductive because it's easier just to kill them where they stand if you're able to do that.

The only other race I've played is Dunmer and I used that racial power occasionally but once I had the Flame Cloak spell it was easier just to cast the spell, which could be used repeatedly as long as I had the Magicka for it.
