Sports Injuries

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 4:35 pm

What do you guys think about injuries in sports? Have any of you members been injured playing in a sport? I've played 3 sports (to a great extent) in my lifetime, and haven't sustained any major injuries. I know some of the members here have torn knees and such.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uHXWhkIdeA Here's on example of an injury that occurred last weekend, and I wanted to know what you all think about it (and injuries in general). The player broke his spinal cord, and had to go through a back procedure the following day.

I sprained my ankle playing basketball with a friend.

What do you guys think about injuries in sports?

They svck, lol.

I've dislocated my knee twice practicing Tae Kwon Do, and it hurt like HELL. I've also fractured my wrist, but that was much less painful.

My brother broke my finger when we were playing basketball. What do I think of this? I think it svcked. Though I never was really injured in any other sport. At least not any bone or muscle damage and that includes soccer, football (with my brother's friends - all older and bigger than me), cricket, volleyball, badminton, hockey, and tennis.

Other than the odd sprain, twist or pulling of a muscle I've been really quite lucky with my injuries. I've never had to have surgery or even take a trip to hospital due to any injuries.
Apart from one time I twisted my ankle really badly on a trampoline (dangerous bastards) I really thought I'd broken it after the crack it made.

I've seen some nasty injuries though, my friend had his leg gashed whilst playing Rugby and I'm sure I've seen some broken bones whilst watching/playing Rugby during my school days.

I just broke my left thumb while playing catcher in baseball. Didn't really think much of it.

Twisted my ankle last year in track, broke my foot the year before in football.

I think injuries svck, and as much as I love watching my weekly football in the fall, I feel so bad knowing my entertainment is coming at the expense of all those player's health later on in life.

Does drunken brawl count as a sport? I once fractured my hand in one with one of my friends but that's it.

I messed up my ankle, playing soccer in the very last pre-season game this year. I missed the entire season. A season where my team got promoted to the next division, and won the Cup Final 6-0. So, yeah, sports injuries svck. I'm not even sure if I'll go back for next season...

I'm sure I've suffered a few minor concussions on hockey over the years, but nothing ever serious like torn ligaments or broken bones which I think is quite fortunate as I've seen several friends do so.

Oh and really strained shoulders from baseball. Something snaps or clicks when I move them.

Fractured my L5 vertebra from football, got speared by a guy that had 50 pounds on me. Also bruised my tailbone from football. Now that I run crosscountry and track, my lower body is constantly in pain. It's impossible to avoid considering how much ground we cover. We run 3 to 9 miles a day (5 kilometers to 15 kilometers for metric), and over the summer I'm gonna try to join the 500 club, which is 500 miles in a month. You just gotta stretch and realize the difference between something hurting and an injury, which can be tough. Luckily I've never broken anything, just fractured and the like.

I wrote this on my phone, my apologies for any awkward autocorrections.

Worst I've had happen playing sports is sprains.

With some sports certain more debilitating injuries are something that could certainly happen. The issue I see with injuries of late is the media's excessive attention to things like concussions causing sports leagues in North America to, in turn, overreact and excessively try and "protect" players from the sport itself.

Not really a direct sports injury but a result of sports. When I was around the age of 11 or 12 I developed osgood schlatter in both of my knees because I overdid it during those years where you're growing up a lot which ended up meaning I could do no more sports until I was fully grown, which should be not in that much of a distant future now but for the last 7 or 8 years I've been deprived of what was my passion, doing sports of all kinds from dawn til dusk, and I've been forced to get new hobbies but now that I'm reaching the age where I can get into sports again I love my new hobbies of reading and playing video games so much more than I loved my old sport hobbies that I'm not even gonna get into sports again. In fact I'd say this particular sports injury was probably the best thing that happened to me at that age because it altered my personality so much and it altered it in a positive manner.

BTW When I say "I did sports" I'm not talking some tiny 2 hours football practice every week that kids seem to qualify as doing a lot of sports. I'm talking really from dusk, til dawn. I actively practiced general athletics, gymnastics and I dabbled in football practices a little with a schedule that would often go something like this.

- Wake up + attend school
- do sports in every free hour in school and of course during P.E.
- go cycling for a few hours usually a 15x2 KM course totaling at 30 KM (which admittedly may not be much but for a 11 year old kid it seems like a lot)
- arrive at home to go back out again and attend gymnastics/general athletics classes (and football for a short while, but the general attitude there didn't appeal to me so I quit it pretty early, nothing wrong with the sport though)
- arrive at home from that for some good dinner
- be called out by friends to go swimming (with one of them practicing it so "hey, let′s not relax! I wanna compete!" or to go out and play football (which again "hey we compete, let's set up matches and blow our lungs out running back and forth the field!")
- go to sleep to repeat the cycle the next day

No computers (didn't own one until I was like 13...), no reading, nothing calm. Just constantly beating up my poor knees setting them up for failure.

And I freaking love that I did it. It was pretty depressing at first like "I can't do anything I like doing anymore..." but then my mom was all like "hey, here have some pokémon cards and a fantasy book". She won the "mother of the year" award that day.

I tweaked my knee tonight playing basketball on a rainy, wet court. Not the first time I've sprained something, but the first time I've landed completely awkward on something. I'm slowly not being able to walk, it's tightening up on me, we'll see how it is in a couple days.

Nothing very serious, just a few cuts and scratches after falling while bicycle racing. The only sort of serious one was when I was twelve, in the most ridiculous accident I've been in. I was chilling at 20 km/h, my wheels got stuck between two planks covering the bridge I was crossing, I fell and got a pretty bad cut just above the knee. Took a few weeks I think before I was able to walk comfortably again. About two years later I fell again when descending a hill at 65 km/h, barely even got a scratch :P.

Had 2 concussions in baseball, yes in baseball....odd I know.

The first one was when I was 6 or 7 during a state tournament . I was playing 2nd base and went to tag-out the runner and he tried to run me over. The kid was humongous in terms of 7 year olds so he completely destroyed me. Still held onto the ball and tagged that fat bastard out.

The second time was when I was 9 during warm-ups for a state tournament. I was at SS and a ball was hit towards me and it took an odd hop and clunked me in the head. The stitching on the baseball was imprinted on my head for 3 days.

Then during a recreation baseball game I slide at home feet first and sprained my MCL and ACL. I think I was 10 or 11.

Finally there was a tri-state tournament when I was 15. While I was at bat I got hit in the elbow by the ball. I was then at second base and when the batter hit the ball I began to run but collapsed on the field. Apparently when I got hit by the ball it managed to hit a vain and my blood pressure plummeted because of it.

Never managed to get significantly hurt playing any other sport then the baseball, go figure.

lol, what can anyone think about them?

I've sometimes injured my feet during football (soccer...). I broke my front tooth 5 years ago too.

Also, during some workouts, I've sustained some light injuries (elbows, knees, and at the back of the head).

Getting speared svcks mate, along with the vertebrae injuries. I have a vertebrae injury that's non sports related, so I get how you feel there. Tailbones svck pretty bad too.

Depends what you consider a sport. I've broken most of my fingers, parts of my arms, torn rotators cuffs, torn neck muscles, sprained legs, broken ankles/toes, etc. Luckily I've never had something major.

I almost bit the end of my tongue off once if that counts? Other than that I've been pretty lucky with injuries, nothing that's ever put me out for more than a week. A mate of mine recently broke his collarbone playing football (soccer) that was pretty bad.

Worst thing that happened to me was a tailbone injury. I had issues sitting and walking but it healed up. I was playing basketball and took a charge from a guy that outweighed me by about a buck 50.
