Anyone going to try the game now that its F2P?
I have been playing TOR but played too much too fast and got burnt out, so I figured I might was well try STO because I never got to try it when it launched.

I wouldn't. Unless it's changed A LOT since it came out. Last time I played there was basically a handful of different missions that were copy and pasted across the whole game. Warp to planet, fly around it and defeat 5 groups of enemies. Same composition of enemies each time, just different skins whether or not you are in Romulan/Cardassian space. I know most MMOs have cookie cutter quests, but STO took this to the extreme. Space combat can actually be kind of fun, the ground portion was horrible though.

Doesn't help that when it came out they were charging a monthly fee AND selling things through the store. Things like ships and races. Maybe with it being free to play it might be better though. It deffinately was not something I'd pay a monthly fee for. But maybe just stopping in to play once and a while.

I will say that Klingon PVP was awsome. 5 cloaked Birds of Prey decloaking around one of the starfleet ships and blowing it out of the sky in seconds, then burning out of there and recloaking for the next hunt.

It's F2P? Maybe, it is in many ways cool, like creating your own race and stuff, but I don't know if I will.

I haven't played a mmorpg other than LotRO ever, I don't see a reason to start now.

I haven't played that in a long time, I just wanted to try STO and its F2P now so I figured, why not.

Oh yeah it's free now. I'll try it but I don't have high hopes from what I've read.

I am gonna try it tonight too, if I like it I might throw $15 at it instead of TOR.

I paid for it for one month, and I didn't like it. It was my first MMO that I paid for and IMO the combat was poo, didn't play it at all after the month. Maybe it has changed from last year when I bought it but I doubt it, and don't think I will be downloading this f2p one.

I wouldn't try it personally unless it's changed substantially from what it originally was as another poster mentioned. Played the beta of it and the game was just too dang slow for my tastes having no real depth to it. With SWTOR you can go inside your ship, interact, etc... while in Star Trek Online you just flew your ship that was it. Was really expecting something akin to the TV shows I had heard about *somewhat seeing as i'm not a trekkie fan*.

Well, I played it a bit. Just logged off.

For a F2P MMo I am impressed so far. Coming from TOR, Rift, EVE, WoW and EQ (and many others) I find the game enjoyable.
Gonna put some more time into the game tomorrow and this weekend. If I am still having fun might sub to it as well.

It has a lot of features that I liked. Character creation was (shock) better than TOR, and you can have a first/middle/last name right out of the box.
All the dialog is standard reading, some voiced areas so far.

Overall for first impressions with less than 5 hours played, the game would be a solid 7/10 for me, TOR and Rift both rate a 8/10.

Not bad for a F2P MMO. Combat may not be for everyone, but I found both ground and space combat to be smooth.
Graphics are dated, but nothing too bad. I still enjoy KOTOR 1/2 and NWN 2 so not a main factor for me.
Plenty of options when you set graphics levels, unlike TOR that is sadly lacking the "high" setting that was in beta tests.

Its nothing amazing, and I have around 4 hours in so far. But I am impressed that I overlooked it this long. LOTS of people playing right now.

Bjorn Redcliff of the U.S.S Pineapple out.

Ya the character creation was pretty awesome. As was naming. You can have the same name for your captain as someone else, because your account handle is different. So I could actually named my captain a logical human name. Thomas H. Gracey, captain of the USS Lateralus. Maybe I'll install the game again, it is decent in short spurts.

edit: Your ship name actually appears on your ship, which I found pretty cool. A nice detail.

I think everyone should give it ago, its free to play now. Its not the most impressive game I have ever played but it seems that the F2P model had brought in quite a bit of new players, that may turn out to be a good thing for the game.

I am gonna play it as much as I can and come back here and give a brief overview of the game, I might even shelf TOR (got 60 days left) and play this and EVE again. Eve supposedly added quite a bit to the game in the past 8 months.

If a game starts out as subscription-based and then moves from F2P, there's usually a good (or bad, for that matter) reason for it :P.

Based on the negative things I heard about it back around release time, I'll stick with Allods.

Well it was free, and worth the time I spent installing it so far.

As someone who bought the game a while ago I have to say that I'm not surprised it's going F2P. The game is awful. There is no nice way of putting it, the game is just bad. The player base is either uncomfortably bad at the game or so good I'm worried that they'll break the game. That is, what's left of the player base, which isn't much.

Sorry, I wasn't aware that the initial subscriptions were optional. However, the game itself was originally not free (obviously :P).

I suggest you guys play it now while it's still fun. It is run by Perfect World Entertainment. Therefore it is only a matter of time before it isn't exactly F2P.

It didn't seem that bad to me, but everyone has a opinion.
Coming directly from TOR and Rift I find it fun.
APB is doing fairly well now too, and it died and came back as F2P.

You know for all the negative things I heard about this game, I'm really enjoying it. Part of that may be because I'm a bit of a Trekkie, but the game itself is fun.

I like how you can walk around your bridge and ship and apparently invite others. The scale of interiors seems too large to me, but it's fine. I can't even walk around my ship on Bridge Commander, so I'll deal with interiors that aren't properly scaled.

The duty officer system is a lot more fun than I expected too. I just started with it late Thursday. It seems very complicated at first.

There's two things I dislike: the game seems to rely too much on the microtransaction system, and if you subscribe and later cancel sub you lose all those sub perks. I'm used to Pirates Of The Burning Sea, where if you sub for just one month you become a permanent Premium member, while continued subscribers are Captain's Club members with extra perks like a 20% discount in their c-store (treasure aisle there). A real great feature is being able to buy store points ingame from other players through the auction house for fairly reasonable prices, but the best feature is that nothing in their c-store is necessary for competitive gameplay. It's mostly cosmetic perks, vs STO where it seems the best ships at least need to be bought, and aren't exactly cheap.

I see no reason to subscribe to this game. I don't want one month's worth of subscriber's perks. Ok I create 4 characters, two become unavailable if I stop subbing? I buy more than two ships and the extras are unavailable? Buying points on the other hand I can see, and I'm considering it. I do enjoy the game.

Okay so I downloaded the game a few days ago and I have to say that I find it rather fun. It's nice that you get a free ship every ten levels to keep you from being hopelessly outclassed. I'm enjoying the space combat and trying out new tactics to see which ones work best against my enemies (All two different types of them) and the ground combat isn;t actually that bad.

Aside from ships that aren't really worth the money anyway, the pay parts are mostly cosmetic and don't effect much. Rarely do you actually see anybody in these "Premium" ships. Overall I have no major complaints against the game seeing as how I didn't pay anything for it.

I am T'Ran Houston of the U.S.S. Serenity Valley.

My personal RP is that I'm a Vulcon raised by Humans, thus the last name.
