StealthThief Games

What are the best stealth/thief games you have played? I'd like to find one I may have missed out on. I've played the Metal Gear Solid series, the first Tenchu game...think that's about it actually, not including playing a thief in the elder scrolls games.

Thief franchise, of course.

Edit: Well darn, didn't read the OP right through. ;-;

The only other series I can think of would be Deus Ex, other than that nothing else really comes to mind.

Thief series, by far. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory gets a special mention, and the stealth segments of Metal Gear Solid 3 are quite thrilling (but extremely punishing if you mess up).

Oh yes, the Deus Ex series has fantastic stealth gameplay. Check those out if you haven't.

Chronicles of Riddike: Escape From Butcher Bay also has some great stealth in it, but it's not entirely a stealth game.

The Dark Mod - http://www.thedarkmod.com/main/

It's a total conversion of Doom 3 to create a stealthy steampunk world very like the Thief series. There are already 50 fan missions available for download with a full campaign and more missions in the works. A copy of Doom 3 is required though. It's highly impressive.

Beyond Good and Evil has some very nice stealth bits as does Escape from Butcher Bay and Call of Cthulhu.

I can vouch for this one as well. The community is very dedicated to its work and the quality of the levels reflects this. I haven't played it since last year, so I can only imagine that it's even better now.

Speaking of fan-made stealth levels, I implore the OP to check out the fan missions for Thief 2. There are hundreds of them. Just be sure to give Dark Mod a look, too.

Thief 1&2, they already been mentioned but despite both being over a decade old they are still the best sneaking games to be released. And talking about mods, http://www.thief2x.com/ for Thief 2 is the best damn mod ever made, for any game

If you want to play more Tenchu, I recommend Tenchu 3 as it's arguably the best of them all. It's named Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven for the PS2 and Tenchu: Return From Darkness for the original Xbox. The Xbox version have 2 extra levels and some other enhancements. There's also the Shinobido series (Shinobido 2 was released for PS Vita not long ago), I only played the original Shinobido for the PS2 but it's good if a bit unpolished.

If you want some childfriendly cartoon sneaking I'm recommending the Sly Trilogy for the PS3. The games are fairly forgiving and not particulary hard (there are plenty of parts that can be done without sneaking), but still a great deal of fun and filled with lots of humor.

Hitman Contracts

I'd be wary of the Hitman games if looking for stealth, personally. On one hand, the disguises, gadgets and open level design are cool, but there's a painful lack of the ability to hide in shadows, and the AI of those games can be great one moment and completely inconsistent and ridiculous the next. I'd have to say out of all the stealth-oriented games I've played, that series has given me the most headaches.

They're a very different kind of stealth games, that's for sure. Any hiding based on line of sight or shadows is not really reliable. It's mostly about hiding in plain sight with disguises.

Still, I think Hitman Blood Money pulled it off really well.

Chronicles of Riddike: Escape From Butcher Bay
Yes, very nice.

Stealth works pretty well in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. And games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra series are horror games with a stealth element to them.

And keep an eye on Dishonored which is being published by Bethesda. If it lives up to its promises it's going to be fantastic.

I don't own any Splinter Cell game but they sound interesting. Which one is considered the best?

Chaos Theory, by far. Pretty open level design (not as much as Thief or Hitman, admittedly), very nice use of lighting and gadgets, and can be either ghosted or played through very aggressively. It leans slightly towards action in the final couple levels, but it's still great.
