Called it a million years ago! This will be a lead in to the eventual ability to sell our used games licenses. MENTOK! Stick with the original.

Also I saw that the used video game market for digital distribution might be coming to the US the US government is thinking of acting in on this for the right of first sale I read a couple of days ago I didn't believe it might happen but it may come true.

Interesting. That game sharing thing was one of the features of the XB1 that actually looked useful, and I imagine it would be even more useful with Steam's huge library of games.

It'll happen, we'll be able to trade our old games away for steam wallet cash. The downside is no more mega sales, since people will undercut whatever sales they have and if Valve sells too low then operating costs. Though I do see them taking a small cut to operate the trading service.

Mark my words folks.

I think in my opinion it's time for PC gamers to get their rights back that we have been missing for the last 10 years and have the used PC video game market come back.

Because I remember in 1998 and 1999 I was able to buy used PC video games from GameStop and Office Depot.

CD Projekt RED supports the used PC video game market if you guys didn't know yet.

Take gog.com for example they let you trade your PC video games or simply give them away or sell them.

Not to mention salleing games trhough steam would be stupidly simple.

Remove the game from your library, add it to theirs. Sure the original owner may still have the game files on their computer, but it won't run without steam, and making the game work there after would be considered piracy.

Done and done.

God knows I have many games I will never play.

I wonder Electronic Arts (EA) with their Origin software and Ubisoft with their Uplay software must be sweating now? Who thinks Electronic Arts (EA) and Ubisoft is sweating right now? Oh and Rockstar with their Social Club software.

If I could sell just half my games through Steam I'd be able to buy so many hats in Hat Fortress 2. YAY!

Does that mean I'll get 50 friend requests a day by strangers wanting to borrow my games?

Interested to see where this will go, anyone want to borrow Ricochet? :hubbahubba:

LOL I guarantee you everyone will be spamming each other every day to "try" out the video games in your library.

I have a feeling Steam's sales will suffer because of this. But who knows.

Personally, I see this as a double edged sword. It'll be good for the used game market, giving people back the power they once had. The downside comes from companies wanting "their" cut since they will want to make money off the used games.

This can be done legitimately and ethically however. I think if companies impose a small $3 to $5 (maybe $.25 to $.75 for each DLC on the game) that covers everything, bandwith download, cost spent on old title, etc..., when selling the game, a player can set their price point anywhere beyond that with little to no problem. Sure, you'll get the idiots who mark something like Farcry (listed at $9.99 atm) at like $499.99, but they'll be singled out quite easily since no one will purchase from them. It's stupid to expect players to pay full price for a used game imho. On the other hand, if you compensate the names behind the games just a bit, just a little bit here, then it will keep the producers happy. They won't be making money hand over fist, instead they'll get compensated for the investment and players get games at a reasonable price. With online games, you can also eliminate the middle man like Gamestop where you'll get highly undercut since they'll need to make a profit.

I could see myself selling something like Borderlands 1 (with all the DLC) for like $10, and the person gets a $19 discount since the GOTY edition is $29.99 on steam right now. We'll have to wait and see though. The borrowing thing may just be the first step.

That's not gonna happen.

In Europe the European Union Court said that the customers have the rights to digital movies, music, video games, or any type of software companies cannot charge you fees. Green Man Gaming fought against this and lost. Germany is now suing VALVe over this Steam restriction stuff which makes me believe this is why Steam is now letting people share their video games.

A few days ago I read an article on some website that said that the US government is now looking into this stuff and will go do the same thing that Europe is doing and give the customers their right of first sale which goes to the sales act that was established in 1908 the US government is saying that a used digial software will be coming to the US in the future and companies lose their rights once that product is sold.

The only thing companies have rights to are the Intellectual Property (IP) names, trademark names and patents that's it but when you sell a digital copy of some sort of software the customer can do what they want with it.

Well, that's for the EU and such. With the US, I see things a little more restricted since companies will want to be compensated. What i'm primarily concerned with when it comes to the US is them wanting to tax the heck out of these digital sales to get their $$$. Personally, I rather go with paying $3 to $5 (with a quarter tacked on per each DLC) vs paying $10 straight up in taxes for selling my game over steam in the vain guise it's for "maintaining the internet."

I check my phonebill each month and there's a good $7 to $10 charge on their for maintaining emergency service lines and such, but I have no idea how much money of that actually goes to "maintaining" emergency lines.

Right now, I see the borrowed games thing as just a step in the right direction. It probably won't be until next year, or possibly 2 or 4 years from now, when we're allowed to actually sell our steam games.

It's not just for the EU the US government is looking into this as well.

The sales act established in 1908 was rectified or whatever they call it when they go back to a bill to add stuff to it in 1975 or 1970 something the sales act was changed to apply to software so that when people buy software they have the right to do whatever they want with it. But the US government never did anything since the bill was changed in 1970 something because companies bribed our government I guess.

But now the US government doesn't care and will be looking into the EU's law for this stuff.

Heh. They're only doing this because the Xbox One does it too. No matter. Make it happen, Valve.

Could you link me to the GMG case? because I think you meant the Usedsoft vs. Oracle case. And I think you also meant that the VZVB (a German consumer group) is suing Valve.

The Usedsoft vs. Oracle decision is but an answer to a preliminary question posed by a national court. It is for the national courts of the EU to put this explanation of the EU directives to practice. The decision is, imo, not clear enough to outright demand that services like Steam should actively facilitate selling a license.

Unless there have been national court decisions stating otherwise, there might be a situation where you're allowed to sell your copy, but you're just not able to.

Either way, it wouldn't hurt implementing these sort of things in the steam client as a dormant function, just to be prepared.

Ok you are right I got some stuff wrong I need to stop reading a bunch of random peoples comments on the internet.

http://www.greenmangaming.com/ is mad at the European Union Court ruling that customers now have the right to do whatever they want with their digitally bought movies, music, video games, or any type of digital software. However VALVe as of right now does not have to abide by that law yet but they say that the European Union Court might come after VALVe's polices as well.

Yeah when I said Germany is suing VALVe I meant that German consumer group I didn't remember their name.

Here's a bunch of website articles to read instead of typing everything.

http://www.edge-online.com/news/green-man-gaming-eu-ruling-makes-cloud-gaming-less-attractive/

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-07-03-gmg-eu-resale-ruling-will-shake-up-the-digital-distribution-market

http://www.dealspwn.com/green-man-gaming-digital-distributors-adapt-eu-digital-resale-ruling-106650

It's nice to see VALVe bringing the option to share the PC video games you bought off of Steam with your friends it's even better than Microsoft's draconian plan.

VALVe at least actually listens to it's customers I do hope VALVe implement a trading video game and selling video game option as well on Steam.

But that game (GOTY edition) is commonly $10 (or less) during Steam sales anyway. On Steam, considering the sales we usually see, there would be little motivation to buy from other users unless they were offering more than 75% off the list price.
