Anybody else interested in promoting the idea a de-Steam-ification patch at some point in the future? OK, I get the simplified anti-piracy measures that Steam allows for, and I get the fact that it gives players some stuff that some may find handy, but it also has it's downsides. Example: just today I got a "could not connect to Steam network" error. Now, I'm not by any means a regular Steam user, so I've no idea if this is a rare or common occurrance, but it does highlight that the tighter coupling with Steam introduces a layer of dependency that does impact on one's ability to even play the game. Problems with Steam == game will not run.
De-Steam-ification would also allow for offline play, local storage of savegames/etc and is consistent with id's previous policy of removing the CD check on their other games after a certain amount of time has passed. It could even be restricted to the base game, with opting in to Steam required for access to DLC.
I'm not demanding this now, but it would be a nice thing to see coming in, maybe 6 months or so down the line.
