Steam? Direct 2 Drive? Disc?

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 3:08 am

At some point I plan on modding Skyrim. Does it matter which version I purchase? Are there any other pluses or minuses to any of these versions (besides the map of course). Thanks for the help.

provided its the PC version, you should be set. Once installed, all PCs versions are identical.

Every version will run on steam in the end so mod support will be exactly the same.

All PC versions of the game use Steam and have to be registered to Steam no matter where you buy it from. So buy from whichever digital or retail outlet you prefer.

Thanks for the help. I really wanted a hard cop of the game and the map, but I'll be heading out of town for hunting season this friday evening, so I need to squeeze in as much pllaying time as possible before leaving. Therefore digital seems the way to go. Gamestop doesn't even open til 10 i believe.

That is not true.

D2D's .exe file of Oblivion is not the disc or Setam .exe and because of that, modders have difficulty with it (Script Extender especially).

Not being offensive here, but please don't give out false information.

OP
, if you don't wanna wait for your disc, get it on Steam. Skyrim's a Steamworks title as it is. I'd avoid clients like D2D UNLESS you're somehow able to buy it through D2D, but activate through Steam.

I think alot of people had issues/couldnt mod New Vegas with the D2D version. Buy it in a store if you want a physical disc, (For collection purposes, or staring at it and drooling) and if you don't, do Steam. The game requires Steam reguardless, so no need to go elsewhere for a digital copy.

Unlike Oblivion the PC version of Skyrim is Steam exclusive, which should mean that the D2D version just hands out a Steam key. I'm not entirely sure.

But Skyrim is steamworks therefore all versions will use Steam and that means that all files will be the same.

He did not give false info you are merely misunderstood. Oblivion cannot be compared as it was not Steamworks exclusive. Skyrim is, thus after installed all PC versions will be the same. As in Steam.

Will the D2D version be D2D-encoded, or will its executable be identical to the Steam/Disk version? D2D had a bad habit of making it illegal for the Script Extender guys to make compatible versions...

It has to be the Steam files that they are distributing, otherwise you would be unable to verify the game through the client. If you are worried though just register the game key with the client then download the game files through steam itself once they become available.
