Last night I bought Dawnguard. Or so I thought. It seems that somehow I actually clicked to purchase The Elder Scrolls Collection. Looking in my transaction history, no record of having purchased Dawnguard.

By God I ADDED DAWNGUARD TO MY CART, NOT THE COLLECTION.

If I in fact clicked a button that said purchase to the Elder Scrolls Collection, I know damn well that it was not clear and how that product would've wound up in my shopping cart I can only assume was an auto "other products you might be interested" in nonsense.

I believe their client INSERTED the unwanted and 10x more expensive product, it was not a user mistake; well the part where I didn't notice a product that I did not intend to buy had been inserted was a mistake, but I certainly did not add no $119 game package that I neither need nor wnat. So this morning when I notice this I figure I'll just report it as an error. I haven't installed Morrowind or Oblivion (already HAVE both via CD installation) so what would be the big deal about invalidating my installations and refunding or crediting me?

This is starting to feel like EXACTLY why I was so reluctant and dilatory to get involved in Steam in the first place -> Products I did not intend to buy winding up in my shopping cart and getting purchased when I did not intend them to . . . the online equivalent of a phone tree from hell to thwart me in my efforts to get help. And behind all that I know for a fact (because I read it) that according to the EULA I'm screwed: its my problem, I already agreed to it, and unless someone is actually convinced otherwise, Steam is in no way behooved to help me solve this mistake.

. . . and here I was enjoying the hell out of Skyrim and actually starting to think "Well, maybe Steam ain't so bad after all."

I'll tell you this Bethesda, Valve and Community, Steam/Valve shows some actual interest in helping me solve this 'mistake' I'll move on and sing Steam's praises.

I've bought a lot of things from Steam, from games to DLC's of all sorts, including Dawnguard. Don't make it it's fault when you should've probably just been more careful.

Besides, you must confirm your purchase at least twice before actually doing it. Do you really mean to say you didn't checked what you bought, AND the price of it?

I have really no idea how did you manage to buy the wrong product since it requires a purchase confirmation. Don't blame Steam for this, it's just your fault for not being more careful.

When I purchased Dawnguard I did it through available DLC for Skyrim in my steam Library. And indeed, when it took me to the store screen it displayed both Dawnguard and the Elder Scrolls Collection. My mouse was sitting on the Elder Scrolls Collection hot button ready to click. But I noticed the price, and looked up and Dawnguard was right above it. Yes, it is deliberate, and it's a sleazy trick on the part of Valve Software. They are taking advantage of the fact that people are expecting only Dawnguard to appear and will just click through. Which is why you should always read everything carefully before clicking on a link on the internet, and read very carefully what the price is. I would contact Steam customer service and demand a refund and if they wont, contact your credit card company and reverse the charges. If they object, file a case with your local attorney generals office.

You got to be kidding. The Collection is clearly marked in the Store as "Packages that include this game", see the picture I linked above, how on earth it's a sleazy trick is beyond me. There's absolutely no chance Steam is going to refund that.

It says "Buy the Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim - Dawnguard" in giant white letters. There's also a giant purple box with an arrow pointing exactly to this one saying you need the full retail copy of Skyrim to activate it.

Underneath it, it says "Buy Elder Scrolls collection." in giant white letters, which is underneath something that says "Packages that include this game."

The price of both is displayed next to the button you have to click to continue. If you know enough to look out for "Yes" or "No" to continue, I'd think you'd notice the extra digit here. There is an additional friendly, light blue, very noticable button that says "Package details" next to that.

You're then brought to your shopping card immediately and it says "Elder Scrolls Collection", not just Dawnguard, and shows the 119.96 price tag, and then a 119.96 subtotal. You then have to click an additional button to buy it.

Considering almost every company that does business online - and many in reality - uses your purchase as an effort to see if you might want to expand upon it by advertising things in a similar vein, I'm not sure how this is a dirty or underhanded practice.

So because of a major reading / visual acuity error, Steam is evil. Gotcha. I know about fifty people right now on Steam and between us we've bought thousands of titles on Steam, and there has never, ever been a report of someone having an item "slipped in" by the shopping client. You made a user error, and you'll get a lot more sympathy from the company if you explain it like that rather than trying to start a witch hunt about how they're totally trying to pull a fast one on you.

I love the consumer base of today.

Seriously?

Step 1, Browse the game/dlc.
Step 2, Add it to your cart.
Step 3, Check out (review cart).
Step 4, Pay.
Step 5, Confirm payment.

No less than 5 chances to get it right on your part and you're blaming Steam? C'mon, that's what's majorly sending our world/society into hell in a handbasket, lack of personal accountability. You want a refund? Call them and be APOLOGETIC for YOUR error and MAYBE they'll consent as a one-time courtesy. Otherwise, live with YOUR error. I have no less than 3 dozen games, probably closer to 50, purchased on Steam and I have NEVER had a single problem, including with all available TES titles.

You didn't notice that you were paying $110 instead of $20? You went ahead with the purchase, provided your credit card info/PayPal/whatever and confirmed the transaction several times? I hate to say it, but it's your fault, not Valve's. You should pay attention to what you're accepting.

They are taking advantage of the fact that people are expecting only Dawnguard to appear and will just click through.

It states clearly: Buy Dawnguard, then Buy Elder Scrolls Collection. It's written right there, all you need to do is read the name before you add to cart. It's basic comprehension skills.
