Stereotypes that Affect You

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 4:25 am

Many people know about the population true, but that doesn't save me from the stereotype of being non-African or worse, European. I've never heard of Matapato, I was raised (not born) in the Great Rift Valley, nice place. My family has been a farming family since they came to Africa.

But I mean, why get angry at simple ignorance? I hardly think that they mean to hurt your feelings or annoy you by saying you sound European.

I mean, I've been asked "hey you're that guy from Australia right? Have you ever ridden on a giraffe!?" more times than faith in humanity needs to be lost. It's never really bothered me though.

That's kind of what all "stereotypes" are in the end. Ignorance.

Im not really afected by all the "gingers are angry" stuff, I've been a little bit afected by the fact that I don't have a soul, but that's not really a stereotype, it's the truth.
There are some stereotypical norwegian stuff, like eating whales, wrestling polar bears, fighting sea monsters and raiding England, but these are also facts.

What badass stereotypes you have, if bears, sea monsters, or angry englishmen attack me i know who to call lol

I thought the Norwegians mostly amused themselves with invading Scotland, Ireland and Yorkshire: England was mostly the work of the Danes, who I think took it much too seriously.

No stereotypes affect me at all really. Ones that relate to where I live (being an inbred farmer) don't apply to me, because I'm neither inbred nor a farmer.

As to the South African (Seff Effrican) thing, if people think you're English with a South African accent they need to clear their ears. We don't sound like a dutchman with sunstroke...

Im Welsh, which just results in sheep jokes with no actual link aside from, we have lots of sheep here.

Well that and women don't exist in Wales.

Oh let's see this will not be easy.
1: Everyone assuming all American's are overwieght war loving so-n-so's.
2: Everyone thnking Christians are push-overs with bibles in hand waiting for the end of days and always forgiving (I'm sure as hell not, there's plenty of time to be with my creator when I'm dead. While alive I got other things to take care of and as for being forgiving and following the good book----I don't follow all of it's teachings specially the "Turn the other cheek" crap. Hit me once and see where it leads...here's a hint---it won't end well).
I'm sorry if this raises a stink but these are the stereotypes that affect me.
Funny, I have an uncle who is devout also. He's now a very lonely bitter man because he wants to bring fire and brimstone on everyone. Best of luck to you.

Edit
I have white skin, but I'm a Native. I used my status card once and got called out on being a criminal scum. Almost tried to get me thrown in jail... for buying a video game. I always get odd looks and questions when I use it, so I stopped using it.

I fit the typical asocial nerd stereotype, but I never hear anyone mention it. I guess that's the benefit of avoiding people?

I mean, I've been asked "hey you're that guy from Australia right? Have you ever ridden on a giraffe!?"

People say British or English, without knowing what half the accents sound like.

Its kinda funny, Like when cheryl cole couldnt do the US x factor becuase they apparently didnt understand her. (I hate x factor so its funny anyway).

Hey I know some of our women dont look the best, but that is incorrect... I hope.

Furry (and a fox at that) - pretty much the same as the stereotypes for bisixuals, except more fuzzy. Weird and possibly mentally unsound.
You know, I get a lot of strange things, I might not be into them, but I 'get' them on some level.

But the whole Furry thing? I can't wrap my brain around it, could you as a furry explain this whole thing to me?

I'm a 19 y/o Australian, so I'm aware of a large number of stereotypes about me. The ones that are relevant inside the country are 'Must drink a lot' (sort of true), 'Must be able to hold one's liquor' (True  ) 'Be obsessed with cars, specifically the Holden-Ford thing' (Not true, I don't care about cars at all).

None of which grind my gears, but I'm relatively laid-back (there's another one) so maybe it's just me.

I thought the Norwegians mostly amused themselves with invading Scotland, Ireland and Yorkshire: England was mostly the work of the Danes, who I think took it much too seriously.

Well, as the history books might teach you the Danes stopped their raiding a long time ago, and we, the Norwegians, who didn't want the englishmen to feel left out started raiding England as well.

Another stereotype that affect me a little is wearing glasses, you know the classic smart/ nerdy, and high whimp-factor stereotype, which I guess I can relate to in some ways, though I don't see how they can coexist with the drummer stereotype.

African. Think about that for a second. What popped into your mind? I can bet you that 99.99% won't think of a white person. Its true, try it yourself with your friends.

I am African, not European, not American. The "weird" thing is that I'm white. I'm a mix of British and Boer. My family is African, and we consider ourselves African, its our home. My dad's side has been in Africa since the 1680s.

However, many don't see me as African. Most assume that I'm American, until I mutter a sentence, then, because of my accent, I'm suddenly English. It annoys me so much, especially when I say I'm African and they don't believe me.
Ha, my mom is African too, born in French Algeria in a Pied-Noir family of Spanish/Alsatian/Corsican descent. Most people here in France don't even know there used to be a population of European descent in Algeria, so they don't believe me when I tell them that

As for stereotypes, I'm French, I've heard a few stupid assumptions on my country when I studied in British Columbia. It was really a minor problem, however, so no I don't personally consider myself the victim of stereotypes.

Just annoys me when I see a black person call another not black because their too "white" because he pronounces all his words correctly or doesn't listen to rap.

This is usually some black guy who likes to wear his jeans down to his knees, wears a grill, and do I have to continue?

I would just hate it if another Caucasian person came up to me and said I wasn't white?

Weird right? More of culture thing than anything else...

See? This makes sense to me, they want to have six with animals, I'm definitely not into that, but bestiality is a fetish that some people have.

Why don't they just call it bestiality? You know? Come right out and say "I find the idea of sixual relationships with animals appealing" instead of the whole cartoon character song and dance?

My accent isn't South African, its more Boer mixed with English, Boer from my dad, English from my mum.

 Yeah, more along the lines of Afrikaans white trash.

Edit: Although come to think of it, a lot of coloureds also have a similar accent to the one you presented. Really depends on where they come from.

I'm from Alabama, half of the people I meet outside of my home state think I'm dumb, drink bud light exclusively and have a thing for my sister.

...I have an IQ of 142(professional test a couple years ago), I don't drink alcohol and I don't have a sister. Oh well, it helps me know which people aren't worth my time.

Seriously? For a thread about stereotypes, this is rather depressing.

Furries are not into bestiality, we do not define ourselves by that, etc. Are there likely some furries who are also into bestiality? Sure. Just like there are some Y people who are also into bestiality. Calling furries "latent bestiality lovers" is, ironically enough, a massive stereotype and pretty offensive to most, me included.

So...... if you're from Africa, then why are you white?

Oh my God, Karen, you can't just go around asking people why they're white.

Anyway, I have ADHD, and the people who think it is just a dodge to medicate obnoxious kids really annoy me. Part of the problem, however, is that in some cases, it is a dodge to medicate obnoxious kids. Really muddies the issue.
