Still getting CTD's since game launch to current 1.8 - Rifte

Post » Sat Dec 29, 2012 4:24 pm

first off, i am able to start a brand new game... but why would i want all the hours ive invested in my character just be thrown away???

I've been searching relentlessly for the past few days at home and at work on multiple posts, google, etc... i've been plagued by this CTD junk everytime, since the game released to the current update 1.8, (i also have used the Unofficial Patches as well off the workshop). If i go near Riften , get inside Riften, or Leave Riften i often get CTD's (always if i dont figure out the cause). As of right now, i cannot load my save games, i CTD within 1 sec of a loading screen.

I've done everything BUT reinstalling the entire game, which i completely wiped my Skyrim steam folder, and saves folder (backed up my saves), and setup steam to redownload all of Skyrim and Paid DLC's.

I do like to mod the game as well, i did initially fix this for myself figuring out that a couple mods were the culprits -or so i thought-. Then when i was able to play my character again i played for 2 hours and im back to the CTD's on loading a save file, sometimes CTD when just loading into Skyrim's Main Menu... So ive done every ini solution i could find, i removed addons, deleted all addons and files and redownloaded them. Nothing worked. I tried to replicate my first fix which was 2 mods "More Dragon Loot" and "Unread Books Glow"... though it didnt matter since i didnt have them installed after my fix.

So my last attempt was deleting all my mods and i kept -
Skyrim.esm (obviously)
Dawnguard.esm
Hearthsfire.esm (i heard this DLC can cause issues still, even with the unofficial patch)
Skyrim Unofficial Patch.esm
Dawnguard Unofficial Patch.esm
Hearthsfire Unofficial Patch.esm

So i have resorted to doing a full folder wipe of skyrim and moved my saves. restarted my computer and had steam do a fresh install. So as of right now my computer is getting a new skyrim at home while im at work... i know its not going to fix anything, especially with all the hundreds of articles ive read across the forums and google but i want somewhere i can have a clean install and back it up in case something goes wrong.

Also... i've downloaded BOSS, im not computer illiterate, nor stupid when it comes to running applications, but im really confused on how its suppose to work as it opens a file into my browser detailing compatibility info and suggests some editor program to clean garbage out of files. Though when i went to get BOSS, originally off Nexus, it was posted that the Latest version was pulled for some reason and they are making an updated version??

The one thing i wish for is a Save file editor so i could reassign my characters spawn point location when i load its save file... oh also for Bethesda Dev team to actually fix Riften would be nice since with all the updates they've done that town is a bugfest... i still have the light blue textured cobble stone wall section on the right when you head to the jail.

Anyone have any ideas on what i could do next to remedy this and possibly rescue my save games from permanent corruption?

Edit: Did i post this in the right section???

Clean Dawnguard and Hearthfire.esm's with TES5Edit, maybe that may help prevent CTD's.

Although installing and removing mods from your save will most likely corrupt your save, starting a new game with your mods active should be ok and should not cause CTD's if you have cleaned your mods.

I suggest to copy paste your BOSS mod list to see if there are other conflicts.

I figured removing mods would make the saves buggy.

i will post my boss report when i get home today and try TESVEdit as well.

I just want to note that, Skyrim - "I BELIEVE" has the worst support for user mods compared to Morrowind and Oblivion. Just saying because ive never had a corrupted game or save in either of those 2 games. Morrowind was buggy as crap for a while and would occassionally CTD but it was fine, it was playable. Oblivion, i dont think ive ever had any errors with that game and i modded the crap out of both! Gah few more hours till i get home...

Morrowind / Oblivion and Skyrim, before I learnt about handling mods properly (and sometimes I keep making stupid errors) I have had no CTD's and no "real" issues that an not be resolved with Wrye Bash, BOSS, TES5Edit etc.

Yes Bethesda does release some Buggy games however the mod support community really fixes a lot with the unofficial patches etc. highly recommended.
