Stop calling the Creation Engine a "new" engine

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 12:31 pm

It is not. Skyrim is still using heavily modified Gamebryo. Now I'm not sure if Bethesda ever said it was a new engine, just that the code was so changed from Gamebryo that they could name it something else. Everyone needs to stop calling the Creation a new engine; it is a new name for the engine Bethesda has been using forever. Skyrim is a great game and I can see Oblivion and Fallout 3 in it, in the way it plays and they way NPCs move and interact with each other. Fingers crossed for a new engine (not a renaming) in 5 years when the next elder scrolls comes out.

how much new code do you need to add to a game engine before you can call it new? or do you want development to be delayed because everything is being rewritten from scratch. i have a feeling you people have never written industrial code before.

I'm amazed by your technical insight. Do you, by accident, also know what you're talking about? Can you give me your personal definition what an "engine" actually is? I'm curious :hubbahubba:

What are you on about? They can call it whatever they want. People are confused or miss informed about Bethesda renaming of the engine and think that the Creation engine is a completely new engine. Nearly separate from what Bethesda has used in past games. It is not, however. It is the same engine they have been using just renamed. They can rename it, but people need to get it straight that the engine used in Skyrim is not new. It just has a new name.

To be fair to the OP, it doesn't feel much like a totally new game engine. I don't know if it actually is or not. It feels a lot like Fallout 3 in terms of NPC movements etc. The improved draw distance and other graphical enhancements are great though.

Wow.
Is skyrim really running that crusty old creation engine?
I would believe it, because deep down it feels the same.
but i have to say, they pushed it like a champ.

im impressed.

It feels the same.
but its impressively advanced for the crusty old crust fest it came from.

That is a bad anology. A better one would be, if I took a toaster that I've called a toaster in the past. Then, I decide to call it a burninator. Then people thought I invented something new, but in reality I didn't. I just renamed a toaster.

It's not really a new engine. But it's not like the old one was terrible or anything.

It is starting to show it's age a bit. Although, Beth have made improvements to the engine.

No its an apt anology considering that the difference between fallout 3's engine and skyrim is actually quite large, relative to engine upgrades in the past. It is based on the same technology and so has the same feel and look.

So is CoD, that doesn't stop people from buying it, playing it, and ranting about how awesome it is. You cannot expect a completely new engine every time a new game comes out, it's just not feasible. Skyrim looks fine, and will be playable by all, instead of a small minority.

As a software developer I have to chime in here,

When a company announces that they are using a new engine, more than likely there are vast parts of it that have been lifted from the old engine and cleaned up. To create a new engine from line 1 would be financial suicide, all the years of bug fixes and performance improvements out the window. You mention that the game feels similar, that is because the Creation Engine is most likely based of Gamebryo's better parts.

Taken from my OP, "Skyrim is a great game"
Speaking old engines, MW3 is the best example of this. Similar to Bethesda's Creation engine, the engine used for the Call of Duty series was originally based on id Tech 3, just like how the Creation engine was originally based on Gamebryo.

Spanish is heavily created using parts of Latin. It totally needs the Latin based syntax to function. Stop calling Spanish a language! It is not new, it is just revamped Latin!

End anology

sheesh... would it be better for you if the started naming their engine with version numbers instead?
the same engine would indicate that theres not been made any changes to the engine, and im pretty sure there has been made alot of changes.

Do you get equally upset when a car producer releases a new model with an updated and modified engine of a previous model, because they called the car something else?
