Strange flickering...?

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 4:49 pm

Hey guys, I've just recently downloaded Skyrim and installed it last night. I'm experiencing a strange flickering that seems to be related to something like a screen refresh rate problem. I've tried so many different graphical settings and combinations of settings, but the problem persists. It only happens when I am looking around or moving; the textures seem to be flickering and there seems to be screen tearing. When I'm standing still, the game looks completely normal. It also seems as if this problem happens off and on; more often than not. I'll soon be able to take a video of the problem, but I don't believe that this problem should be happening as my computer, according to the minimum/recommended specs, should be able to run the game perfectly fine. Here is a description of my specs:

  • 500GB 7200RPM HDD
  • Radeon HD 5770 1GB x2
  • 4GB RAM
  • AMD Quad-Core Processor @ 3.4

It seems to be a problem that nobody else is experiencing as I haven't seen many threads about it. All of my video card settings are normal/default, none of them are overriding the game's settings. The game detects that my settings should be High. Thanks in advance for any of the help that you guys can provide.

Does that flickering seem transparent for you. I also seem to get transparenr flickering while moving and also some distant mountains flicker while i've move but not all mountains. Oh yeah i've also got some weird transparent lines in the sky, best seen at night time, and those appear without moving at all.

You're not alone.

I saw this within seconds of playing. Everything looks perfect and gorgeous when you're not moving, but when you turn your head or move around, certain objects' lighting flickers.

I find it's especially noticeable during specific periods, which I think are in moonlight, or direct sunlight. It bothered the hell out of me at first but I've come to ignore it and just get lost in the world without even noticing it now. Would love to fix it though.

I get weird flickering in windhelm, if that's how you spel it? It Lois like shadows being cast from seems of textures or something. It's annoying.

For the original author. Both CF and SLI work far better after there are "Profiles" in the drivers for the game. While waiting, try running on just one 5770.

Is it the shadows? If it only happens outdoors, it is probably the shadows. The lighting and shadows outdoors creates a flickering effect when the sun moves. The shadow maps get a little bit of smoothing out after they are rendered and as the sun moves, the shadows re-position themselves. When they do, they will be blocky and then smooth out which looks like flickering. It's more noticeable if you aren't using ultra shadows (but it is present there too), the performance impact is pretty rough though.

Textures on distant terrain will also flicker sometimes, they've done that since Oblivion.

Thanks for the responses guys; however, the flickering that I'm talking about isn't anything to do with the lighting of the game. I describe it as flickering because that's the best way to actually describe it...it seems as if it's some low quality motion blur that won't ever go away.

UPDATE: The problem seems to be fixed when I put the game in Windowed at my full resolution...hmmm...kind of strange eh?
