Strict School Policy

The family of pre-schooler Hunter Spanjer said officials at the Grand Island Public Schools told them the manner in which the boy signs his name is a violation of its “weapons in school” policy. The claim they were told Hunter had to modify the way he signs his moniker to comply with the school's zero tolerance code against weapons in school.

Humanity, why do you test me so? :stare:

If I we're the parents of the boy in question.

My response to the school would be,

[censored] YOU!

Then I'd flip a desk over.

I personally cannot wait to sit back and watch as this world burns. I have no hope for humanity. This planet needs to just shake us off it's back.

I'm sure I wouldn't flip a desk. But I would let them know how I feel as I pull my kid out of that school.

As usual when people post these sorts of threads, I think there's probably more to the story than Fox News is telling us...

Probably. But the point is, the school has an issue with something absolutely ridiculous.

Or they don't, since they're basically denying the whole thing...

If you really think they wouldn't spin something like this out from nothing then your faith in humanity is obviously much more than you implied in your first post.

Or, they are now denying it because they've come to the realization that they are complete idiots for telling a poor deaf kid and his parents that they don't like his handwriting because it reminds them of a [censored] finger gun. They are denying it because they realize being threatened by HANDWRITING is stupid and they are morons for blowing it out of proportion.

Zero tolerance policies have had stupid results like this since forever. I'm not sure it's especially unbelievable.

I don't think they're talking about handwriting.

By "sign", I'm sure they mean finger signs. His name is hunter, so I would guess his sign for himself would be a gun or something, seeing as the school has a problem with it.

Unless your word for hand signals is handwriting, pardon this post. :P

Well firstly, you've just proven that you haven't actually read or understood the article, because HANDWRITING has nothing to do with it.

And secondly, so far we've only heard one side of the story, so it would be stupid to jump to conclusions like yours. You obviously just want to be incensed about something, but common sense dictates that we should wait to hear all the evidence before we condemn.
Zero tolerance policies have had stupid results like this since forever. I'm not sure it's especially unbelievable.
I didn't say it was unbelievable, I just said I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to it.

And as much as there is a history of institutions making ill thought out moves based on blanket policies like this, there's also a history of irresponsible news outlets (of which Fox is one of the worst in the world) outright inventing "political correctness gone mad"-type stories like this one from thin air. So excuse my caution in believing it.

You know what, I misread the "sign" as handwritten signature without realizing it was sign language they we're talking about. So, now the person who wrote the article is an idiot for not clarifying that it is sign language that they are referring to. Apparently they are trying to get a "rise" out of people for not properly clarifying in the article.

Now, the schools request while still completely ridiculous is not so baseless. I would still however tell the school how I feel and my previous post about the schools denial still stands.

Everyone else seems to have understood it. You're the only one who didn't think it was clear.

I went to a Catholic School for a short stint.

They would give detentions if your shoe was untied, justified it by saying to was upholidng the school uniform standards.

I didn't last long there.

Seems reasonable to me. There's no doubt that it would lead directly to him actually going around shooting people when he gets older. Those mass-murder-preventing school administrators are heroes. I say lop the kid's fingers off before it's too late and he starts signing his name to innocent bystanders.

among the list of banned "weapons" at the high school i went to was: staples

it was not enforced but still, some one in the school district offices decided that it was necessary to ban staples for being to intimidating of a weapon.

That's the whole point of Fox News. The full article in the link explains it a bit better though.

Anyway, it does seem like a false outrage to me, after reading into it more.

Pencils, musical instruments, shoes, they are all weapons.
I find some weapons policies to be over the top, but:
1. the school CAN and most likely WILL get sued for any reason that somebody thinks they can sue about
2. Soccer moms can be nuts
3. So many incidents with kids using guns have happened within a halfway extended period of time, so AMURRICA does the obvious thing and goes overboard in the name of "safety". (somewhere in here, there would be a link to a George Carlin video related to the idea of that, but the language is not suitable for BGSF.)

I would like to think that there's more to this story, and there probably is, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it were all true. Zero tolerance policies are a [censored]. I remember a few years back, there was a girl that got expelled from school for refusing to take drugs. Why? The drugs touched her hand when she pushed them away. They said she was "in possession of the drugs."

What is with this world...
