I am stuck in internet hell....

Post » Sat Jun 22, 2013 11:19 am

I have Century Link as my internet provider. We are paying almost $60 a month for a 3.0Mb/s plan. I did a speed test because I've been wondering why my internet has been slow and we're getting 1.65 down and .50 up. Grade F. So I get in touch with them to ask why and they try to sell me a land line and their highest package at $70 a month which is only 10MB/s.

I then call up the only other company in town and they are telling me that someone else owns my house and that this other person lived here in 2008 and they owe the other company for equipment and a past balance. Then they tell me they can't sell me internet until I prove to them I own my home. I was like, are you serious? WTF? They tell me they want a copy of the deed; I hold a mortgage so I don't even have a deed. The bank has it. I tell them the best I can do is send them a bill. They tell me it's not good enough. So here I am...stuck with an over priced Century Link paying for slow internet.

I feel like I live in the middle of no where...I mean I kind of do but I find it odd that there are only two ISPs and one of them thinks that someone else lives here.

I know we had a thread about internet speeds a while ago, so, what is everyone else getting?

Raise your voice.. Your problem seems to be people not listening to you, as in the companies. Simple questions (meaning demands), when you call that other company say how can I prove it?

Yup, I did that. I have no problem raising my voice..just ask Bank of [censored] you in the ass America. The lady kept asking for a deed. I eventually told her to go to hell and hung up. Sometimes I want to beat people into submission. Everyone always wonders why I'm miserable...this is why...

My speed is as fast as the Communications Hamster can operate the morse key. Or about 6.5 mbits on a good day, and it costs me a fortune. On the other hand, I get a fixed IP address, which I need as I run my own mail server, a reasonable bandwidth cap (these things are getting hard to avoid now, not like the good ole days) and I don't have to put up with throttling, contention or especially bad customer service. I'm not convinced there's such a thing as an ISP that excels on all fronts.

I'm still talking to this guy from Century Link, he keeps adding more things to my account and calling them gifts...that I have to pay for. I keep telling him...'If it were a damned gift I wouldn't have to pay for it. Get it off my account.'

Tell them you'll show them the deed to your house when they show you the signed source of your agreement to pay for extra "gifts" and what Toaster said, tell them that if they do not, a lawyer will get involved.

I've thought about that.

I just told this idiot from Century Link that I'm running short on time; I have a graduation I'm going to and if he's going to upgrade my account he better do it now before I lose patience and just hang up. He's still saying....'Just a minute I'm almost done.', how difficult is it to push a few buttons?

I pay $66.90 for "Personal TV+High Speed 10" but actually get 20Mb down rather than the 10Mb my bill states. (My ISP was reclaiming "grandfathered" packaged accounts and offered me a better deal, so I took it.)

I can't believe they don't want your money. If your name is not the same as the last account holder, they shouldn't have a problem. Dumb companies are dumb.

I'm going to call them tomorrow and ask for a manger and tell them flat out that I am not responsible for that account. The thing that is bothering me is that they claim that the other person lived here in 2008; my wife has been here since 2004 so where the hell are they even getting this information from?

All I can say is thank frack for virgin media as I'm on their biggest package an I'm paying about £90 a month but that's tv+broadband+landline or I'd be paying 50 a month for a up to 120mb an sure I don't get that but damn you are been treated like someone's little [censored] I feel sorry for you cause on a good day I get about 50 up 30 down an a bad will be 20 up an 10 down.

An I thought my mother had a crappy connection I just cannot get across how sorry I feel for you.

I get that for 40€. Seems that the ISPs in USA are pretty poor compared to european ones. Of course it's a much larger country too

As someone who works in customer support/technical support, I'd say your best bet isn't telling the lowest rung who's following policy to go to hell, as stupid as that policy is (it'd probably make me say 'bye,' hang up on them, and then shout "WHAT THE HEEEELL!?"). They will put customer notes under your phone number saying that you've been belligerent (which won't affect hold times or make people hang up on you [so long as they're actually trying to be good employees], but will make people have a lowered disposition towards you when you call in--depending on the call center, you may be labeled as an 'abusive caller'). I'd say the next time you call, try asking for a manager or supervisor, who may know if there is an exception to the issue with the deed.

Also, a lot of policies change weekly in call centers, so it may even be that there IS an exception; the agent you spoke to just didn't know it because they didn't get the news of it.

Though I'll say that's a ridiculous policy and I can understand it being angering. They can easily punch your address into Zillow.com or Trulia.com and find the year your house was sold to you if it becomes such an issue at that ISP.

In my neighborhood, we have AT&T and Charter as options.http://www.speedtest.net/result/2788909295.png. My upload speeds have been suffering lately, which svcks 'cause I need them to be pretty decent for work. Networking isn't my strong point, haha.
