I stumbled upon some news thats old but is it still happenin

What is different from a dog or cat compared to a worm? Do the lives of innocent worms not count for anything? Is it because they are slimy and not cute enough?

This is what always puzzled me too.

Worms don't even have sufficiently advanced enough brains to register the pain or to feel fear or panic. Cats and dogs however do. That is the difference when you hook two live animals up to throw them into the sea.

The article states that it was already illegal but that the government needs to step up on enforcing said law. So it's illegal but I have no idea if they've managed to stop people from doing this or not.

This is just an example of the "cute factor". Fish and chickens for example, feel pain just like a dog or cat yet we have no qualms about killing them.

Well I guess Koalas get more attention than threatened frogs, so there's your answer. I've personally never used worms to bait any fish, I've used dead stuff though.

Why is no one thinking of the sharks/fish? They feel pain, right? Has anyone ever gone fishing using a hook/bait? The agony a fish must go through is mind boggling. Not only do we trick the poor critter into swallowing a barbed hook, we pull it out of the water, yank the hook out, and let the poor bugger suffocate.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind people eating cute animals. I eat whales and horses and I have no beef with those that eat cats and dogs. What I do have a beef against is if people are torturing them. There is a difference between putting an animal down cleanly to be eaten and putting large fishing hooks through their snouts while they are alive and then tossing them into cold water to struggle until they get eaten alive by a shark following the trail of their bleeding wounds.

That's pretty racist... Aside from anything else, there are plenty of European countries (and the US) where practices that are pretty widely regarded as unacceptably cruel to animals still go on.

Anyway, this story is seven years old, so aside from actually going to Réunion and finding out for yourself I imagine you're gonna have trouble finding more information on it.

No, you're absolutely right. Because other countries have pirates, mass kid nappings, governments killing their own people, child soldiers, food crisis, warlords. The list goes on.

Yup, other countries have their fair share of issues. But last I checked not to the extent of countries like those found in Africa.

So no, it's not surprising to me that some news agency and animal organization discovered that some group in Africa was using cats and dogs as shark bait. Just like it's not surprising to me that there has been war in the middle east for thousands of years. You can take your pretentious attitude and shove it.
