Subscriptions andor Micro-charges

Post » Sun Jun 30, 2013 2:40 am

So, I've never played any of the other MMORPG's ever. Upon researching ESO content, I've come across the term "micro-charges" and began to ponder. One - what exactly are micro-charges? Two - How much do micro-charges typically amount to over the course of gameplay? And three - What do subscription costs typically amount to?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on the game, so we'll use a couple as reference.

WoW is a subscription game (15/mo), but has micro-transactions in the way of different mount and mini pets that are not obtainable through the game... this often is for charity.

Tera is a free to play game but has micro transactions in the form of XP boosts, Mounts, Clothing, and other superficial items that you cannot obtain in game.

Runes of Magic is a free to play game, but sells power boosts and items that DO affect in game play... this is considered Pay to win.

We don't know what ESO is going to do, but I would speculate it will follow the WoW model.

If Zenimax decides on P2W or F2P I hope they at least have a subscription available. I'd rather pay monthly than spending 3 years worth of money up front to enjoy the game like subscription games.

I hope it's a $5-10 subscription. 15 is kind of pushing it for my straight out of high school budget!

Highly unlikely... but even so, if you cant afford $15, you cant afford $10. You're posting from a computer... unless you're in a library, you aren't that poor. Even welfare makes $15/mo possible. It's two Big Macs!

No offence, but that's a good thing. I hope they go for subscription, it will make it less available to children, if you have to pay an extra subscription the parents might think twice before making us their babysitters. Kids often lack the ability to accept they aren't the main character when they're online. Besides if a game is readily available to children you have to tone down the gore and that breaks the immersion.

Edit: I hate autocorrect.

Nah, brah. I am one of the biggest advocates for P2P this forum will ever see, but the argument of it keeps children or any other form of undesirables out is total [censored]. Any *punk kid can get his mom to pay a sub for him, and most people over the age of 20 aren't much better than a punk kid anyway.

* Not talking about the guy you were quoting, he's probably not in this demographic just by how the way he possessed basic grammar and punctuation skills.

Well... I can always hope the kids play on console only. But I do agree, the poster I quoted didn't seem the type I'd prefer to see stuck playing COD or DCUO for a few more years, that said. I have other reasons for preferring monthly sub, such as keeping out xp boosting etc. but I still think it's somewhat of a deterrent to the undesirables.

Mini items that cost a lot more than they are actually worth, generally.
