Subtextures in ParticleSystems

Does anyone know how the amount of subtextures is set in ParticleSystems? I can adjust the number of subtexture UVs or disable them completely and update the arrays, but either the game crashes or the object has no texture at all.

There's obviously something else that must be done, but what?
