Suggest a new smartphone for me...or help me pick one...

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:41 am

Currently I have an LG ALLY running the Android OS. The phone is rooted. My plan is through Verizon.

I just found out today I am due for an upgrade and since I absolutely HATE this phone so needless to say I am more than eager to get rid of it.

I have been very interested in the iPhone 4s but I'm not sure if it's still one of the best phones out there. I see there is a new Droid out so I'm looking for input here.

Please don't tell me to wait a few more months for this phone or that. I've had nothing bit issues with this POS phone and want it gone. So, any help in picking a new one will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Samsung Galaxy S2. Probably the best phone on the market. Extremely powerful, and the display is incomparable. Seriously, screen-wise, nothing comes close. A bit bigger than the iPhone 4S, and sharp as hell. It's Android, and everything runs lightening fast.

I've had mine since Christmas, and I absolutely love it.

Probably this. I'm saddled with the original Galaxy S for another year because of my contract but even it is extremely powerful, can't imagine how nice the S2 must be.

What's the internal memory on the S2? That's my biggest concern because my Ally runs out of memory if I'm not careful which apps to install. I have to make sure they can be moved to the SD card, otherwise my phone slows to a crawl. Which is why I was leaning towards the 4s because of the 16 gigs.

Galaxy Nexus has 16 GB or 32 GB

Also, the S2 doesn't exist for Verizon.

OK cool, I'll look at the Nexus then. I'm planning on going to Verizon on Saturday.

It's got 16GB, and this can be expanded by a further 32GB with an SD card.

EDIT: The Nexus is great also. Very similar specs to the S2, although it's designed more for media, whereas the S2 is more of a 'serious' phone.

They're still the two most powerful phones on the market though - either one would be a sure bet.

If I do go with the Nexus how easy is it to remove Verizon's bloatware? I have no use for Facebook and stuff.

It's a Nexus, there isn't any.

Not really. The Nexus is designed to be the best that Android can be. That's the idea behind the Nexus line. Generally speaking, of course. There are things here and there but generally speaking, it is.

I ditched my iPhone for a variety of reasons and wouldn't recommend one.

For one, they're designed to force you to buy a whole new phone whenever Apple decides you should. Two, they're not designed to be controlled by you but by Apple. You want to change something? You're going to have to crack the thing open, literally. There are others, as well. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

What do you mean "controlled by Apple"?

Apple use a closed system, i.e. anything you install on your phone has to be okayed by Apple first. Basically.

Just that. They don't like you? They can brick your phone. You cannot customize it, only Apple can. Any customization you do is limited to a wallpaper and moving icons around. Any more than that voids your warranty. It's really draconian, to be honest. Especially in how they manage the App Store.

The Galaxy Nexus is a nice device (basically the "dev phone" version of the Galaxy S II). It's a no-buy for me, though, because I insist on expandable storage, and the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have an SD card slot, so you're stuck with the amount of storage that it comes with.

That's no different than the iPhone.
