Switching to PC

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 9:03 am

I'm thinking about saving up for a laptop, would it be worth playing skyrim on that instead of the ps3?
I'm not very good with all the 'Software' and things, is it really complicated?

Also, I know you can play it on the PC with an Xbox controller, does this apply to ps3 controller too?

In my mind, the main reason to switch would be to get mods. Whether a laptop can handle mods would depend on the laptop and also on which mods you plan to use.

Yes it is so much fun on a PC. You will need about 800$ if you want a laptop that can actually run skyrim with good graphics though.

Building a desktop is cheaper and worth it in my book. Must it be a laptop? You could build a desktop much more powerful than a laptop.

No its far away from cheaper. You should go ahead and buy skyrim on the PC today if your thinking about buying a computer to play skyrim on. Because it's on sale today for 40$ on steam.

Just to be clear, I won't be buying a PC/Laptop FOR skyrim, but rather if it would be better to play on that :)

I'll probably go for a more powerful PC, if it's cheaper than a laptop.
I'm not bothered which one, they both do the same :P

Would you be willing to build one yourself?

Its really fairly simple. Find compatible parts (people here, including myself can help with that). Then its just like Lego's putting it together.

Unless you absolutely need the mobility of a laptop (school, work) I have to second Starforce's recommendation of building your own pc. It's really not all that hard to do, and there's plenty of helpful video tutorials on youtube on how to do this, also, I'm sure the fine folks here on the forums would be willing to assist you in any manner they can.

I built my pc shortly before Skyrim was released. Not my first time tinkering inside the case, but it was the first time building one from the ground up. Booted up the first time, thanks in part to a few video tutorials online.

It''s really, just tab "A" into slot "B". After watching a few videos, you could do it. If an old dog like me could...well you get the idea.

Here is a great place to start and finish that very thing.

I had a pc built for me through my Uni I.T shop. Turned out about £200 cheaper than anything I could find online. If you're in Uni you could do the same? And yes it's way better. I play on ultra now with HD mods etc and I cant believe the difference between pc and xbox. Yes Skyrim is beautiful but the difference is amazing especially when compared side by side. I played it on xbox for about 4 months until getting the pc and I'm not going back

EDIT:Typo

EDIT : You are more than welcome. Plus it is highly recommended to take the advice of those like Starforce9. He is one of the members that made my build possible. There are some very sharp people in this forum, that are willing to help.

Get a desktop not a laptop. They are cheaper and you will get one that runs the game well far more easily.

You can use a ps3 controller with the game but you need to find drivers and install them and it can sometimes be kind of tricky. It's not plug and play like a 360 controller is. But it's certainly possible.

It's not a major issue, I use to be a Xbox gamer, so I have plenty of old controllers :)
It's just I'm used to the ps3, but like I said, no issue :D

I'll watch the videos and read the threads posted, and if it's something I can do, I'll probably have some questions. Thanks again :)

the thing to consider between a desktop or laptop is you can upgrade your parts as needed with a desktop, with a laptop you're stuck with the hardware that came with it,no upgrades. also there is a program called motioninjoy that will let you use a ps3 controller as an xbox controller and it works great for skyrim on pc

I'm playing on a HP Pavilion dv6150sl (a 600€ laptop) everything maxed out with a 4x af 16x

If you buy a laptop with a 15,6" screen and a resolution of 1360x768 you don't have to spend an arm and a leg for a heavy, power hungry desktop replacement.
Just make sure to invest some money into a good laptop cooling base like this one: http://www.enermax.co.uk/produkte/peripherals/aeoluspremium.html?L=%25270

The chips inside a laptop can get pretty hot (80 deg an more) while playing. An active cooling base will lower the temp around 70 deg max.

That should be TO around 70. I've never had a laptop run at 10 degrees.

I have laptops, including a "gamer", and would still suggest building a desktop (been doing it for over 15 years).

It looks complicated because of all the wires, but it isn't. It's all just insert wire 1 into slot a and all sorts of easy to do things. Just look up some guides, if you get really stuck talk to someone. Its by far a very easy process most people just think is hard.
