Perks, high skill and good (improved) equipment will make you a beast in combat regardless of weapon, however there is a general rule of thumb with one-handed weapons:
Swords do the least damages but are the fastest.
Maces do the most but are slow.
Axes are in between.
(I could have mixed up maces and axes, but you get the idea)
Don't worry though, smart strategy, perks, skills and items win the day. Try time your combat moves too, learn to sidestep power attacks from enemies, block efficiently, use hit and run techniques... Combat has never been better in TES.
