Hey so I just got into Skyrim I'm a lvl 5 Nord, I'm trying to play using a 1h sword and sheild playstyle. I've noticed that 1h swords arnt that strong and do little to no damage to most MoBs. So does anyone know if they are weak throughout the game or just the beginning and any tips on using 1h sword would be appricated.

There are basicly 3 melee playing types: 1H + Shield, 2H and dual wield. Dual wield is most dmg, while 1H is least dmg. However with training, good equipment and some perks even 1H + Shield will dish out high amounts of dmg.

Perks, high skill and good (improved) equipment will make you a beast in combat regardless of weapon, however there is a general rule of thumb with one-handed weapons:

Swords do the least damages but are the fastest.
Maces do the most but are slow.
Axes are in between.

(I could have mixed up maces and axes, but you get the idea)

Don't worry though, smart strategy, perks, skills and items win the day. Try time your combat moves too, learn to sidestep power attacks from enemies, block efficiently, use hit and run techniques... Combat has never been better in TES.

I'm using the Foresworn sword and dwarvan shield combo at the moment (lvl 14) and I seem to be doing a serious amount of damage because I've used a lot of perks, just keep on doing what you are doing and you will get better with it

I usually use a sword/axe in 1 hand and a spell in the other, it works quite well. But yeah, the swords are quite puny to begin with.

Skyforge Steel sword seems fine for me. Can get it pretty early in the game.
