Swords, Axes, or Hammers?

Basically my list of Perks I want is too bloated, and I want to focus on one type of weapon. I'm Two Handed, if that matters, but One Handed weapon perks split the same way. Anyway:

Swords are quick but do the least ammount of damage (of comparable equipment quality). With Perks you can really increase the critical chance and damage, though.
Hammers (Maces) are slow but strong. And with Perks can ignore considerable armor, which at higher levels might be worthwhile.
Axes are in the middle of speed and strength. With Perks, you can add Bleed damage, which I'm unclear on what that is and who useful it is in the long run.

Eh, while I'm at it, I'll ask how useful you find the different Power Attacks and their Perks. Is the Backwards power atack all that useful, compared to just doing a standing power attack? Or a sideways power attack, or the one done while sprinting?

I'm always leery of slow attacks, since they make you essentially helpless against enemies with the ability to juggle (knockdowns/throws) or incapacitate you. At least with fast weapons you'll occasionally get a strike or three in. It really depends on what you like best tho, so play with all three against tougher enemies before deciding.

Of course I should go with what is most comfortable for me. I'm really more interested in other people's opinions, though. Trying to gauge what bonuses people find useful. I still don't understand Bleed damage, for example. Or how much armor creatures like dragons, trolls, and giants have that would make the hammer's special bonus useful.
