2h swords faster

You are discounting the difference in center of gravity (or momentum) and differnce in rotational force required to move the far end of a a longer weapon. Weight is not the only consideration to be taken when thinking about or discussing speed of attack.

True, but take a look at real two handers. I am not aware of any that were weighted towards the tip the way that chopping swords were. Almost all had some degree of taper. The shape implies balance and speed over mass at the point of impact. They were well balanced and meant to be used as cut and thrust weapons.

Most two handed swords actually weren't any faster than two handed axes (they were generally both 0.7). Not sure if this was intended or not.

I made a mod for my own use that overhauls weapon speeds, including speeding up two handed weapons a bit. After seeing this topic I decided I'd go ahead and upload it to the Nexus. You can find it http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5172.

Please give me feedback, as I've just been using it for myself and it may or may not be very balanced, might contain bugs, etc.

I have been porting my Oblivion weapons into Skyrim. All of the models are based on real weapons. Once the CK comes out I am going to incorporate them into the game. I try to give each weapon advantages and disadvantages in terms of damage, reach and speed. I take into account size, use (cut, thrust, both?), and quality. The result is lots of steel swords with different looks and characteristics. Mixes things up a bit.

I give thrust swords a speed and reach advantage. I view thrust as a faster form of attack than cut. I take away some damage. I have relatively few thrust swords in my inventory - maybe the type XV.

Slice swords follow much the same patter as thrust swords but for a different reason. These swords are swung, but they tend to be lighter curved swords. I have Tulwar and Shamshir in this category. If I had a Katana it would be here too.

Cut swords tend to maximize damage but lose speed and reach. They are often not much different than an axe. In this category I have the Xyphos, Kopis, Khopesh, Falchion, Cutlass, Seax in this category.

Cut and thrust swords fall somewhere on the spectrum. Here I have the types X, XI, XII, XIII, Shiavona, Gladius, and a bastard sword.

That's my reasoning and I'm sticking to it ... unless somebody can convince me that I'm wrong :).

The issue of slow/awkward 2h weapons is what prompted me to write the ScriptDragon plugin in my signature.
I wrote "setgs fWeaponTwoHandedAnimationSpeedMult 1.85" into my AutoExec batch file and my plugin processes that command every time the game loads (and once every few minutes, just in case) so that I can have less clunky 2h weapons without needing to create a plugin or modify weapons.

Whether it's realistic or not isn't a huge factor for me - I just wanted to change it to a speed that felt better and more fun for me as a player.
It makes enemies with 2h weapons a little harder to dodge, but that's part of the fun for me too.

Edit:
----
Added the 2H weapon speed file as an example batch file for my plugin on SkyrimNexus.

... a modder who's actually extensively gone into medieval style fighting has said the weapon speeds are closer to reality than they were in OB

Closer to reality for a puny game developer, not for a titan mammoth sword-master... (I am also sure they used e-bay swords for testing, which were NOT 1000-folded steel swords, but rather, cheap and heavy china-steel, uber-thick, uber-cheap, and swung slowly for fear of hand-sting when they hit some useless target, trying not to break the sword too.)

The issue I have, is that they glue your feet to the floor while you swing... They don't do that in real life, and in real-life you lean into it... Like boxing... the real damage is from shoulder movement, not momentum of the swing.

Is there any way to speed up your movement speed when swinging a 2hander? It's painfully slow compared to 1handers
