SyFy show "Merlin" and Skyrim

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:27 am

If any of you have seen the show, the main story line of Skyrim is almost a cut and paste from the story line of the SyFy show Merlin's second season.

Cut and paste is really the wrong term for this. The similarities are sparse...

There are similarities but they are vague.. and have all been done before i suspect.
People like comparing Skyrim -and Dawnguard- to all manner of TV shows, Movies, Games, and books.

The BBC show Merlin (Syfy just shows it in the US) was setting up the thing with Dragons in the first seconds. Merlin probably summon the Dragon a couple of times, and the show does make a big focus on the dragon aspect until learn Merlin's Heritage at the end of the 2nd season, then promptly fixes the show focus back to magic.

EDIT:(Also shouts?)

Skyrim's not the only one where you can change specifics to get a similar synopses.

The similarities are significant. But not a "cut and paste."

Not saying its a bad thing, just pointing out another source of inspiration Bethesda used when making Skyrim :)

People tend to forget that Merlin was a Fairytale and Myth during the Medievil times. So in some logic, Merlin created the idea of Skyrim.

There is also a fair amount of similarities between The Elder Scrolls and J.R.R. Tolkien's fantastical universe in The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion
and G. R. R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice and the popular TV-show Game of Thrones.
These western fantasy games/books/shows all share a lot of similarities, as they all pretty much stem from European folklore.
While Tolkien may be the Godfather of the modern fantasy genre, he has based much of his work on Nordic and British lore and history.

Series two of Merlin was aired in 2009. It could have been written earlier, but the first series was 2008. They said Skyrim had been five years in the making, so the MQ could have been written before the series.

Yes, yet he is referring to the show which is different from the myth/fairytale.

The reason why they're all so similar is because they all come from the same source, theres bound to be similarities.

Two fantasy themed stories that have to do with swords, magic, and dragons? No way!

There's a glaring difference between the two, though: One of them svcks, and it's not Skyrim.

Considering that the 2nd season of Merlin began airing in late '09, and they were piecing together the main gameplay/plot elements from like '06-'09, I'd call it coincidence at best.

Yes, My comment still stands as the series of "Merlin" is the same as every other Story or Film. it's based from the original 'Merlin' Fairytales.

Merlin does not svck and no I don't think they watched the show for inspiration. And anyway Merlin in the show does not kill dragons and absorbs their soul.
