I Take Back The Complaints

Post » Fri Jul 30, 2010 5:29 am

You know, after a while I sat here and thought to myself, what would I do if I were Crytek?

Well, I came up with some valid answers and reasons for those answers - these are as follows :

Q - The online multiplayer is laggy, why?

A - The multiplayer is laggy due to peoples connections, the peer-to-peer matchmaking and the dependance on peoples connections being active. From my own person networking career, I have the right and knowledge to say that JUST BECAUSE you have a 50Mbps line does NOT mean that you will always be host or have a higher advantage, if anything, I have noticed that when people do have these lines, they are likely to die more often, and a lot quicker. This is because their download rate is higher than everyone elses, but their upload rate also, is higher. Meaning the data from one player can be transfered to the other at a faster rate, but not the other way. Below I have provided a small guide -

1Mbps Line to a player with a 50Mbps -

1Mbps can only send a maximum amount of data between 0.1Mbps and 0.9Mbps
50Mbps can send a maximum amount of data betweem 0.1Mbps and 49.9Mbps

1Mbps can only recieve about one THIRD of it's overall speed at MAXIMUM (So, 1.0 divided by 3, would be around 33.3%, or in data 0.3)

50Mbs can recieve about one third also, of it's overall speed (So, 50.00 divided by 3, would be around 16, in data that would be about 16.0Mbps. This is MEGABIT not MegaBYTE, commonly confused there is a BIG difference)

So, in thoery, the 1Mbps line can only send out 0.3Mbps which is about 38KiloBYTES a SECOND. This means the 50Mbps line can only receive a maximum of about 38KB from that ONE PLAYER, sometimes even less. Whereas the 1Mbps line can only recieve about 128KB from the 50Mbps line as the 1Mbps player's line isn't able to support a higher amount. where, as mentioned above the 50Mbps player has a large amount of data availability.

In other words, I can give you 10, but you can only recieve 1 every second. My connection is 50, I can recieve 50, but you can only give me half every second. It will NOT be beneficial or any different to have a 50Mbps line unless EVERYONE else has one too. In even simpler terms, the 50Mbps connection speed will only be beneficial, as that 50mbps can only play at a rate the data is uploaded by other players. So really, this isn't Cryteks fault. Blame those laggy, crappy lines, or those higher super-amazing lines. Your choice.

The ping is also relative to the connection, this is used to measure the distance and time it takes for the client to relay and echo a host to a server etc, I cannot be bothered to write much more about networking on this side as I am using too much room, so if you want to know about ping measurements and how they work go here - http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?referrerid=109801&t=576877 for more.

Q - Why is Crysis so glitchy and buggy?

A - The game is buggy due to a large scale problem, the game was not originally intended for console, though, when designed for PC the game can be patched quicker as the product is more effective on PC's above consoles, simple fact. The PC Community is a lot more useful and easier to use and repair than a sealed console unit. So, unless you have a PC you aren't going to be able to have massive scale patches on the Xbox, this again isn't Cryteks fault, it is Xbox Live and Microsofts fault for this. Crytek have more availability and accessibility on the PC than they do over the console market, this is because of Microsofts rules and regulations, if Crytek want to release and have more update capbilities, they will have to pay Microsoft royalties for server space etc etc, and not just that, Crytek would have to keep those updates up for a long time to keep users in the future being able to be updated to the correct version... Even when the next 2 or 3 Crytek games come out. Simple laws baby.

Blame Microsoft, not Crytek... It's their policies which affect everyone, want better capbilities and less lag? Play PC versions, simple, sorted. With the PC communtiy you will also notice there are a LOT of user patches, meaning they aren't official from Crytek or other game companies, but they work and help the game be fixed easier without the requirements to make it official. Though against the policies of some game publishers or designers, it is a good way to keep your game running and working without having to rely on the developers to do the work for you.

Q - My Crysis accout isn't working properly, and my email account won't sign up or link up properly!

A - My reasons for this would be the server encryption or something to do with MySQL, though I cannot say much on this as I am not elligible to put forward much information as I could get into trouble, I am positive that this issue is not Cryteks fault, and a direct result of a mismatching versions in firmware on the Console and the software version of the Forum Topic Board, for example IBP or Invision, or whatever Crytek are using for this site.

Q - Why can't I join games, it's taking tooooo long for me to find one!

A - Again with the above mentioned thing, as a lot of players are experiencing lag, they instantly blame the company, like I did for a long time. But, as this isn't the companies fault or the fault of the players, it's down to their ISP's to provide a decent service, those players are usually elligible for a higher speed, though, I am personally unable to be provided a decent speed, even though I now have FO Lining, I am still only recieving a maximum of 1.4Mbps. Blame me for your lag.

But due to the laggy games because of the players peer-2-peer connectivity, more and more people are dropping out of the online side of the game like flies, they blame the developers and move on to the next shiny thing. The dedicated players, like myself, continue to play the game, regardless of what I think of the company etc.

Q - Why is my Crysis game not running properly? The textures are going funny, or I only see purple.

A - A graphical issue does not mean it is a direct result of the company, it can do this for many reasons, much like a PC, The Xbox (Being a PowerPC) renders graphics in multi ways, some via direct loading, and other games are loaded in bits depending on the location of the player. This isn't uncommon, though isn't nice to have it happen. It could be the graphical processing unit in your Xbox, it could be lens on the DVD Drive in your xbox not picking up data quick enough, it might be your disc is a little dusty. It could be many things, check how old your console is, check the disc for dirt, use a lens cleaner and if all three of those don't fix the issue it is either something internal to do with your Xbox or the game has a scratch or a faulty sector on the disc.

Q - The grain bug is making me crazy! How do I fix it?

A - You can't. Simple as. Wait for a patch, it is an issue which isn't something easy to fix from own personal experience with it on this game, and many others. Usually a coding conflict in what happens with the player doing one thing and actually being another type of action it will be on the screen until dashboarded or reset. As mentioned above though, it is a possibility that it could, or might just well be your console. I have not experienced this issue majorly on the Xbox version, but have had it happen a few times on PC. Therefore, meaning it must be my PC. etc.

Q - I get a lot of gameplay lag, what is this?

A - It is a result of the game being made for PC, the graphics settings have to be specifically tunes and tested for Xbox 360, meaning the tweaks might work great for some consoles, but not good for others. It can differ from console to console, as by example, this could be affected by age of the console, where the console is kept, too much dust on it, previous overheating issues etc... It is a massive factor, just keep your console clean all the time and away from carpets or dirt and it should be good for a few years.

Q - My online stats aren't working or showing up, what is going on?

A - As far as I know, the statistic server was down a for a while, but apparently has been fixed.

If you have any questions or answers you would like to add to this. Please, message me or post below and I will add it to the list.

Nah, it's not our job to know what causes the problems, that's what Crytek are paid for.

While your data is accurate your wrong in the way the LIVE system works in this regard. LIVE itself barely uses any bandwidth when compared to things like video streaming. So while you may have a 10mb+ connection speed, LIVE will barely use it when gaming. Its because the system is designed to use as little resources as possible to allow 360 owners on low speed connections to be able to still enjoy online gaming. So the actual amount of lag players get is more to do with the distances between players (IE ping). A player in Australia with a 50mb connection and a player in the UK with a 50mb connection who are in the same game will still both experience lag simply due to ping scores.

The main reasons that many players experience lag is bandwidth issues (IE bad connection/overtaxed connection) or excessive ping scores (IE 200+ping in FPS gaming). And not due to the disparity between connections speeds, unless a particular player has an extremely slow internet connection (like dial-up).

EDIT -

I know how pings work, but I did explain the main reason for the lag in the post above. I didn't cover enough ground on locale, I shal include that.

Also, the differences between connections does make a massive difference too. Lest we forget that.

Thanks.

I thought live was just an underlying service to bring people together and to support the games in bringing people together and the actual networking is done by the game.

Networking is never done by the game, Networking begins with the program being allowed access to a hardware device to access the internet to relay information to and from remote hosts etc. A game cannot produce the internet, only connect. Xbox Live uses the internet service to provide data to and from clients. Though certain codes can be used or put into place to allow faster or slower connectivity of the online game asforementioned.

Apologetic post is apologetic.

The problems this game has are the responsibility of the developer and it's publisher. Nobody else is to blame. The game was released in an unfinished state and Crytek themselves know this.

With that said, I'm glad to report that the online matchmaking has recently improved, vastly so. It's just a shame it took so long. That's not to say the online is perfect - it ain't, but I'm at least able to enjoy it much more consistently now. Damage has been done though, in terms of developer rep.

In an ideal world, all games would work perfectly out of the gate, but that's never gonna happen. The closest I've seen to it though was the release of Halo Reach. That game's netcode is outstanding and absolutely the benchmark for console p2p.

Yeah, Reach has pretty much no lag, at all. There are some annoying balance issues, but the lack of lag/connection problems/etc. is amazing.

What an absolute load of bollocks. I shall repeat what others have said on this forum. "WHEN I PLAY ONLINE WITH REACH, OR WITH ANY COD GAME YOU CARE TO MENTION, I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER WITH LAG, GLITCHING OR ANYTHING ELSE YOU CARE TO MENTION THAT HAPPENS IN CRYSIS2"
The MP was broken from the start. Stop trying to save Crytek. It messed up big time. I'll repeat myself.. "IF NO OTHER GAME YOU CARE TO MENTION HAS NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER WITH ONLINE PLAY THEN THE FAULT MUCH SURELY LIE WITH CRYSIS2 ITSELF.

Indeed, but to be fair things have improved somewhat recently.

I still have the odd bit of bullsh*t like crappy host, connection loss, lobby problems; but on the whole the online side is running much better then it was.

You know, I was like you when I first signed up to the forums, I complained, ranted, and even attacked the developers on their Twitters... Just to prove a point, I had people asking about the support of dedicated servers, I was EA's worst nightmare for that of 3 weeks, though I like to think. But then when I got a better connection, I realised that actually, it WAS NOT entirely the fault of Crytek, it is also people with low speed connections blaming everything on the developer.

A lot of people come on here, and complain about the networking or how it has been done, I on the other hand, have 10 years plus experience in networking, I am a networking and IT engineer, I build networks, PC's, I do it all. And I know, for a fact that in some instances, writing a program or game to support a vast array AND WORK in a comfortable fashion with other released, is a difficult thing to do. It IS NOT entirely, the fault of Crytek, it is the restrictions in play by Live, the PC version of the game runs perfectly, no lag issues, no grain bug, no nothing. The console release is a result of the bi-product of a PC release; the game is NOT the same as the PC version, just looks similar and plays similar, just because it looks and feels the same, doesn't mean it is. The game uses different codes, different releases of the engine too.

However, this doesn't mean that just because of this, it should be acceptable to have as much lag as it does. Though, it doesn't help, when Crytek KNOW of this issue, and are trying to fix these problems, and they have people like me, and you coming here to complain about the same issues over and over again. It's the nagging effect, when you say to someone to do something more and more over and over again, they will feel less motiviated to do so. If you leave them to do what they have to do, they will get it done. You have my word.

If they don't I personally, will pay you £50 for every time I am wrong about this. No hands up, no joke. I am that reluctant to believe that Crytek will fail in the next patch. I believe in them, and so should you. You paid them for their product, you have the right as their customer to support them, no matter what their issue.

Fine if you agree or disagree, this is a debate forum anyway. So, everyone's view is welcome, I don't have an issue about any of the listed above. I am just stating the views I have and the views of others.

Halo Reach doesn't have the problems that Crysis 2 does? Ping is more important than speed unless you are 1mb or slower... btw my ping is 25 on average so its not my connection...

It depends on the ping rate. Anyway, I'm not bothered about ping, Im explaining a mass overall issue that occurs during the online playability of the game, this doesn't make ping the most important. If I have a 56k connection, I will not be able to play. If I have a 50Mbps connection, I can play. I'm pinpointing the MAIN key features of the game that are issues and what is needed to be done.

Simply put, I couldn't give two sh*ts about the thing ratio's, either which way, players should be able to join people within their own geographical location, or close to that area. I've joined Australians, what f*cking good is that?...

I've joined Australians, what f*cking good is that?...

its annoying to play against people far away cause of the latency, i already said you need an alright connection speed

I know but the whole thread is getting majorly off topic. I need people to actually pay attention to the original post. But, it's a problematic issue but you will see change I guarantee it.

Well we were mainly complaining about lack of support but it has gotten much better recently and I hope it stays like this! Do you think this new patch will be good/great? I WANT THE PATCH NOTES NOW, hope they fix the lag problems... and balance stuff out

Patch Notes are usually released post-patch now anyway... Most companies are doing it this way. It's easier so that people can see the differences and link them from the patch to the notes. Differences are seen through the eyes of the blind. Simple.

Yeah but Crytek/Cry-Adam released the newest patch notes earlier than the patch! :) Good for us too!
