I am taking a train to the Midwest

My girlfriend's daughter is getting married so we are going to Michigan to see the ceremony and visit. Out of all the options, this makes the most sense. I am going to get a sleeper compartment as it's 27 hours for one leg, then a 2 hour layover, then another 3 hours. I am looking forward to seeing the country from the train. Never traveled this way for any distance. Only those tourist trains that go about a 100 miles round trip.

Weird thing, it is cheaper for me to get on the train in Western Colorado than it is if I were to go to Denver and get on it there. They carry us and our luggage farther, but charge less for it.

Anyone gone on a train trip? I know it is a popular and convenient way to travel in Europe, but I don't know if it is popular here.

So you are going from Colorado to Michigan?

I imagine you will see lots and lots of grass, followed by more grass. Oh yeah and a ton of corn.

I imagine that you will run through Chicago though, so that could be interesting.

Riding by train is also really unpopular in the US, obviously because of the size of the country. I know that trains run from Union Terminal here, but any passenger trains depart at like 3 a.m.
